Anyone know what the limits are to advertising when you work out of your home? I live in NY and they are very strict as far as how you can advertise. I have asked friends and family to spread the word, but word of mouth doesn't seem to be drumming up much business. I really want this venture to take off- but can't seem to get customers...however the customers I do have are so loyal- so I know I am doing a good job...any thoughts or ideas?

My first thought, before you bring any attention to yourself, would be to check out the laws about selling baked goods out of your home in your area. If you start advertising and the Health Board gets wind of it, they could should you down and impose huge fines. Once you check with the Health Board, they could probably direct you to the appropriate person to inquire about advertising regulations.

Do you have kids in school? or if not do you attend school card parties/chinese auctions? You can make up flyers and ask that they be put on the tables at these functions. Also you can donate to church/school bake sales and include a business card. If you do cakes for a large function or party ask the hostess if you can put your business card on the cake table.

Definitely check with your local health department before advertising or it could cause you some costly problems. Most likely you will need to be licensed. Also, they should let you know if you need a licensed kitchen to sell baked goods. Hope this helps.
