Hello everyone, I just made my first batch of MMF, followed the directions to a tee (only thing I couldn't do was, add all the icing sugar cause it wouldn't take anymore) and now it's hard as rock. I can't even squish or roll it out it's that hard. I wrapped it so no air touches it but still.

So now what? Is there a way that I can soften it or not? Not enough icing sugar. Ok I am rambling on and on. Sorry, what to do the cake is due Monday and I am loosing my mind here.

Please help!!!!!!!

Try putting it in the microwave for 5 seconds at a time. I just made my first batch yesterday and this is what worked for me when I went to use more today.

I think the usual cause is heating the marshmallows too much. They still look like marshmallows even once they are melted, they don't lose their shape, but if you take a spoon to them, they are actually soft. So this may have been the problem. You could try putting it in the microwave to soften up, but I doubt it will help. Think I would start again.
Did you double check your amounts?

just pop it into the microwave wrapped in plastic wrap for 30 seconds or so until it feels soft. then unwrap it and knead in some shortening. i do this all the time for my mmf and it works like a charm.

Be careful because it WILL be hot inside! Don't want you to burn your hands like I did!!

as i work it in its breaks at 1st but then as i mix in the glycerine its gets soft again...

Thank you all so much for the suggestions. Gonna go pop that puppy in the microwave and see if it works if not gonna add some shortening and go from there.

Again THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Hi Vie,
I agree with Squirrelly, I think you may have over heated the marshmallows.. When I make MMF the marshmallows are puffed up and soft when I take them out of the microwave and a quick stir softens them to a fluffy mixture but it isnt really a thin liquid.. I then add the icing sugar , but not all at once . Add about half and then slowly add the rest a cup at a time.. I have never used the entire 1 kg bag. I also grease my hands with crisco when I am mixing in the last of the sugar and when I'm kneading the MMF.. I haven't had it harden at all , even when sitting for a few days.. I keep it wrapped in saran wrap and in a tupperware container on the counter. You might just need to make a new batch. Good luck.
