I am doing an engagement cake for a valued long-time customer. Her daughter got engaged a couple of weeks ago. The party is Oct. 29th. I know she wants a sheet cake and it will have whipped cream frosting (this is all she ever gets!! they love it ) so extensive decorating of the actual sheet cake is not really an option. She does want me to use one of those BIG engagement rings as part of the decoration on the cake. Soooo.. my idea is to maybe put that ring in a box.. I know I can use a square cake for the bottom and actually make a well for the ring to sit (like in a real ring box) but I am stumped for the top. I have no clue how to make it stand open. Any ideas??? There are so many clever people on here!! Just a note.. I have never worked with fondant.. but I am willing to give it a go. I want this cake to be really special. thumbs_up.gif

Is this what you want? This is made of royal icing. I piped the sides and the top seperately. When they were dry I used royal icing to stick the sides around a cushion of fondant, into which I pushed the ring. I piped royal icing along the back edge, placed the lid in position and propped it up with a small stick and left it to dry for 24 hours. I then removed the stick and decorated the outside of the casket.

Thank you. This is the idea that I have but a little bigger. I have worked with Royal icing before so this seems doable to me.

On both these pictures above, are the rings done in fondant also? They are so beautiful!

Hi Gingoodies,
I'm currently working on the exact same idea of a ring box with a lid standing upright and slanted. I had my DH make me a wooden stand for the whole thing and I will be using fondant to cover the cake and wood parts. I've done it once so far and totally messed it up because I forgot to cover the wood AND the cake w/ fondant at the same time. So it there were big gaps. Oops! I should have started over but by then I was so far into it that I kept going. It turned into a jewelry box though because I forgot to cut out the indented part for the ring to sit down in. It was just for practice but I get so impatient that I tend to rush.

I LOVE Ellepal's cake! What an excellent job!
I can't wait to see how your's turns out. Please be sure to post the photo.
