Double Barrel Cake - Sort Of ... Stacking Question
Decorating By customcakesbysa Updated 2 Aug 2014 , 12:12pm by customcakesbysa
I'm making a stair-step cake following Doug's instructions here: http://cakecentral.com/t/581817/spiral-staircase-cake-help-needed (I'm loving this idea!) Anyway, this ends up having a total of 6 layers, so does it stack like a double barrel? I've seen a couple of ways to do those, some using boards between each 2 layers, some not - just cake & filling. With the way these layers are cut, would you use boards between layers?

I would put a board under the top 3 layers...so a semicircle shaped board, and 4 dowels in the 3 layers below.
How on earth are you going to cover this thing?! Will it be fondant covered?
I guess you could put boards in every 2 layers but it seems a bit like overkill, unless your cake is starting off as a 16" round or something. But for a 6" or 8" cake I think just one board in the middle of the layers will suffice, since the top 3 layers weigh the least.
AIt's an 8" cake & will be all buttercream. Thanks for the post. All those boards seemed like too much to me too.
