I have been asked to replicate this cake (design by Holly Hannam). She stated in the description she used Merken Candy Melts to create the ship. Anyone have any tips on how to do this? I was thinking it would be like using a template with Royal Icing. Which medium would be better? Loved the night background, any tips on re-creating that? yes like a frozen buttercream transfer you could do the melted chocolate-- flip it over and pipe all the details --i would do that in all abc buttercream -- i pat the piping lines out with a flat weave kitchen towel -- you can get the water perfect blending the different colors--

i'm just curious why anyone would want the titanic on their birthday cake - idk with the dark cloud over it and all -- i never watched the move myself knowing the ending all too well -- but i watched a show about how the making of the movie and i know that there was a love story, the necklace and this wonderful rainbow appearance one day during the filming and if i was using the titanic as a theme i'd at least have the rainbow in there -- but still -- i don't understand the thought process --

very well done cake

Recreating that sky - use an airbrush.  If you don't have one - try the spray cans of colors from  Wilton?  Ice the cake in blue, then spray w/black or a navy blue.

It looks to me like the cake was iced light blue, then a 'plaque' of darker blue was placed on - see how much thicker that area is?  I would airbrush the plaque w/the navy or black before adding it so you don't get over spray.  For easier handling freeze the plaque.

I was thinking about the frozen Buttercream transfer but I thought the chocolate would have better lines. Not sure about the theme I guess she is just a big fan. I loved the movie too. Kakeladi good idea. That is what I was thinking about doing just something new to me. I will do some trial runs early and if I get it right just freeze it!
