Hi all,

I was just wondering..I've heard of squeezing the royal icing through a stocking to get out the little lumps and crumbs that collect in royal icing but has anyone tried making a sort of 'filter' in the bag?  Lets see if i can explain what i was thinking>>So you would put the coupler in bag, cut a small piece of nylon and put it over top of the opening of the coupler, then put tip on and close coupler? Understand??? Just wondering if this could be done or would you have to apply to much pressure to get the icing to flow quickly for piping.? I just thought this might be easier than squeezing it through the nylon before hand..Any thoughts? Anyone try this?

as you've mentioned i think it would require you to have to apply too much pressure -- but if it was a metal screen that didn't have any give... but it would still have to be very fine mesh -- but while that might diminish the amount of pressure needed it's still the least pressure to pipe without any of it -- this is intriguing though --

 

it's a worthy thought process because i hate straining it in the nylon -- 

 

i'd put this in the file with my gyroscope type delivery stand that keeps the cake straight & tall at all times with the self correcting nature of the gyroscope :-D wishful thinking--

 

but i really like the automated piping machines and icing machinery

It seems like if you do have little bits in the ri you could end up clogging up the filter (which would need to be very small).  I think it would be easier to just filter it before putting in the bag, wouldn't need the added pressure.  Let us know how the filter in the nozzle works if you try it.  Very interesting idea!

K8 you crack me up! I love your gyroscope idea too.;)  That would be heaven! 

 

 

KK..I think you may be right on that little filter clogging really quickly.  

 

I will have to give this a try next time I'm doing my cookies and will let you all know my findings.  I'm always trying to simplify and speed up all areas of cookie decorating. If this works I will be thrilled. ;)  I guess i was just hoping someone else tried it before me.hahaha

I thought I read in a previous post that somebody put the icing in the nylon then put the nylon in the piping bag......hence one step, rather than straining then putting in the piping bag. In essence, this would serve as the "filter" sweetcravings was thinking of. Right? Or am I delirious? Finishing the second of two cakes due today (first one already delivered) on about 3 hours of sleep in the last 36.....so it's a distinct possibility I'm sleep-typing! :-D

I use the nylon method as explained in link number 2 that MBalaska provided when I'm going to do RI stringwork as I use tip sizes 1-0-00. Works great.

I haven't read all the replies you have gotten so far but.........the tiny piece of nylon is going to get clogged quickly :( Sooooooo..........

Rather than what you have thought to do - use a clean, unworn nylon knee hi stocking:)

Put it on your hand like a glove, fill your hand w/the icing then peel off the stocking so you enclose the icing; now push it through the stocking.

I have done this for years with both royal and B'cream.  Works great :)
