Best Dowels To Use For A 3 Tiered Square Cake?
Decorating By sweetobsesions Updated 27 Jul 2014 , 5:27am by sweetobsesions
It's me again! Sorry I just really don't want to screw up this cake!
I was just wondering what the best dowels to use are for a square 3 tiered 8",10","12? And how many?
Sorry & Thanks Again!
AHi :)
I'm also interested in this, I was going to use bubble straws but just need to see if it's the best option
AAh I heard about that! But I will probably have to get them at Michaels or Hobby Lobby. I have seen the plastic dowels & plates but I don't think it's the SPS. [@]leah_s[/@]
AIt isn't sps from hobby lobby or michaels. If you go the wooden dowel route consider getting the wooden dowels in the wood art dept. they are stronger and straighter than the Wilton ones in the cake dept.
AOkay what about the plastic ones that are wilton? Are they better than the wooden ones? Thank you! [@]vldutoit[/@]
AYes they are much better. The last Wilton wooden dowels I purchased were so crooked I had to throw them away. They are made of bamboo and I think the quality has really gone downhill. The plastic ones are my first option now.
AOkay I will go for the plastic ones! How many would you suggest I use? [@]vldutoit[/@]
AIt depends on the tier resting above them, I don't do squares, hate em! But for an 8" round(resting on top of a 10" or larger) I use 6 dowels. Tip, if buttercream, take a cake board and lightly press where you want your cake to sit them place your dowels inside that perimeter. If you use fondant, place your board on your tier and use a toothpick and lightly mark around the board and put your dowels inside the perimeter. For squares I imagine you will need more than a round.

Large straws---bubble tea or milkshake--will do the job nicely. 5 in the 12" and 4 in the 10".
AWill do [@]vldutoit[/@]
I can't believe the straws actually work! I'll definitely have to try if but I think I'll wait & Try it on a smaller cake & not for a wedding for the first time hah thanks guys! [@]maybenot[/@] [@]kuuushi[/@]
A@sweetobsessions I use these now! Found them after seeing duff from charm city cakes using them. Just needed to see if they could hold up three tiers!
AWow then it must work if Duff uses it! Hahah & definitely the cheap way! I love Duff! [@]kuuushi[/@]
AIf you're new to stacking, I would really try sps or something similar. Straws are great, but sps is a bit more forgiving if the tops of your cake are not COMPLETELY level. With straws and dowels if it's off a TINY bit, it will show.
AI just don't think I can get the sps on time. I got the white plastic dowels, I don't want to risk using the straws. I hope they will work okay! [@]morganchampagne[/@]
AThey will be fine! Do you have a small level? Get one if you don't so that when you ice, you can check for level-mess. And also when you are stacking the cakes,
I've only ever used the plastic bubble tea straws as support and never had an issue with a cake collapsing or moving during transit. They're cheap and easy to use. Make sure that when you're inserting them that it's the flat edge going into the cake, not the other pointy end. I stick one in the middle of the cake, then approx 8 straws around that (if it was a clockface I stick straws in at 12 o'clock, 3 o'clock, 6 o'clock, 9 o'clock and then one inbetween each of those numbers. Some of my cakes travelled an hour or two in the car and didn't move an inch.
