Hi Cake central fanatics....I just wanted to write a quick update on my interview at the French cafe. The owner loved my cakes, and has asked me to work on some fondant dummy cakes for her windows and wants to hire me once she opens up. I am so excited!!

I appreciate everyone's support on that cake, because I was ready to scrap it!! Your pats on the back over the last two months meant alot in keeping up my confidence level. I hope I reciprocate enough on this site to others.....it's so so so important that we are all positive and encouraging to each other. SOB!! icon_cry.gif Ok, sorry for the mushy moment!!

Anyway, I'm looking forward to all of your great inspiration...keep posting those gorgeous photos, folks!!

Ellen

Congratulations Ellen on getting the job. I knew you would after I saw your cafe cake.. It was fabulous . With you doing the window cakes I am sure it will bring a lot of business her way so she was wise to hire you. Hope we get to see some of them. icon_smile.gif

Good for you, congrats on your coup! Just make sure that your "dummy cakes" are protected from prying and poking fingers.

Also..do NOT give them away for free, they take just as much time to decorate as real ones!

KUDOS on your job, keep us posted!

Woo who!!!!! Congrads Ellen!!! That job sounds like so much fun~ Good for you!!

I hate the one to bring this up but I think it might help you some. Just some food for thought.... I've heard of people helping set up things for Cake Shops, retail stores etc.... They worked their butt off helping the owners get ready for the big day. Then after the big day the owner said they didn't need them any more & did not hire them. If you could please get a signed contract for this job. Also make sure that the owner knows that these dummies are your's & go with you when you leave. That should also be on the contract.

I hate to be negative but in this cruel old world you have to protect your stuff. So take care & this could be the coolest thing that's happened to you!!

Wow, very good points turtle and diva. I guess I like to believe that people are essentially good, but I am no (cake) dummy!! icon_razz.gif I am not making the cake dummies for free.....I will make them and put my price on them. If she does not want to buy them for my price, then she doesn't have to. I'll just put them in my cake studio and use them for my own. I like the idea of a contract...good thinking!! thanks again.

Good for you!!!

I know it is hard not to trust people but you have to take care of YOU first. Follow those great suggestions....

Sometimes we tend to forget that WE ARE business persons too. We have expenses just like other folks do, but we tend to get caught up in the joy of creating and forget the nuts and bolts of it all.

Yes, that is a good idea, to make sure someone isn't just using you for a window decoration to draw in new customers for her Grand Opening! I too tend to think that people are honest , then I get a rude awakening! Something that has happened w/ a woman owning the shop across from me comes to mind! I will post a whole saga about that later!

I guess I might would furnish the dummies or charge what I would consider 1/2 price as they are advertising for you as well as her, if there was a sweet enough deal contracted for me to make a good price on the sales of my cakes in her shop, but It would have to be a very clear agreement. Also I think that she should push your cakes not only as a sell by the slice item in her shop but make it known that her, pastry chef does weddings etc. whatever, to get you biz with a small commission going to her for having the storefront. Because her shop might take right off and might not...and not everone who comes in might want cake, what I guess I am trying to say is there should be something extra in it for you, in case cake sales arent that booming. Maybe a nice little line in her menu about the resident pastry chef? Oh yeah, CONGRATULATIONS!!!! LOL

I like KayDay's idea...
Should be something extra in it for you..because not everyone eats cake...
Good luck...sounds like a good start for you..
