Hi Everyone,

I'm working on a wedding cake for this weekend. I have a stencil I was originally going to airbrush, but now I'm thinking I'll use royal icing, and then airbrush it. I did a test run, and the airbrush paint pulled away from the outer edges of the royal, and I'm not sure why... I figure it's one of two reasons: 1) I stuck the stencil on the test dummy with shortening, or 2) it was wet when I painted it?

I can't wait for it to dry because I won't be able to lift the stencil. Can anyone help!? I'm definitely going to color the royal on my next test run, but it's driving me nuts that the paint has pulled away.

idk i kinda like it that way -- but i would color first as you said, or go back and paint after the royal sets up -- i really don't know -- is your royal too thick on there? looks puffy

I did a pretty thick layer, maybe I'll try not so thick next time... I wanted it to pop out a little. But if I can't fix the pulling of the paint, I'll definitely have to do it thin!  I thought about going back and painting it, but I'm scared b/c it will be silver on white and some of the parts are teeeeny tiny!

once you get a rhythm going with the thick/thinness of your paint-- the paint kind of clings to the raised part pretty reasonably --it adheres itself y'know if you have it composed right -- once you get going with your practice area you'll see what i mean -- but if that is gonna be silver and you go grey with your royal you're half way there --

you could overpipe it too --

That's true - I guess I didn't think of that. So it's not too scary :) It should cling pretty well. Thanks! I'll do another trial run tonight. Fingers crossed!

Do you have silver lustre dust, or just the airbrush silver? I asking because I think you could wait for the RI to dry, and with a flat brush held almost flat to the surface of your cake, glide over the dry RI with a powdered brush...might be worth a try.

yeah it was because you airbrushed it on wet RI. Airbrush paint will bead up when something is wet. If you have pearl dust I would mix some into the RI, then go over it with a alcohol/dust mixture and a teeny brush once dried. Sucks, but that is kinda what you have to do. You might be surprised that it's easier that way.

Ok! So I ended up stenciling the royal icing and then painting with airbrush paint once it was dry. I was pleased with how it came out, there's room for improvement, but it wasn't a complete disaster :) Thanks for your help everyone!
