AHello,
I've been asked to make a 4 tier wedding cake and I am just having a hard time setting a price. This is my third wedding cake that I will have decorated the first two wedding cakes i did were for a family member and a friend so I gave them that as a wedding gift but for this cake I am going to charge just not sure how much I should charge. Two of the tiers will be square cakes and the other two tiers will be round. The cake will be serving for 350 people. I was thinking of charging $2.00 per serving which would come out to $700 so now is that a little pricey? I really don't want to overcharge or undercharge. Also the cake will more then likely be covered in fondant. What is the best way to figure out how to charge for a cake?
i would work out how much the cake is going to cost including cake ingredients (plus the cost of gas and electric for cooking), cake filling, fondant, decorations, board, box, (EVERYTHING). You then need to add on money for yor work/time. one thing i have learnt since making cakes is dont be scared to charge for your time you are providing a service for someone just like any other business or home baker. I would advise getting average prices on what other people are charging you dont have to charge the same as them but it will give you an idea you can then tell your customer a price if they are not happy with the price ask them what their budget is and tell them what you can do for them for that price. If they are not happy with your prices let them go elsewhere and 9 times out of ten they will end up paying a lot more money or paying less and getting a crap cake.
$2/serving is ridiculous even as a home baker! No way would I do a 4 tier covered in fondant wedding cake for $2 serving. If your skill level is up there, you don't need to sell yourself short. Anywhere else they are going to pay a minimum of $6-12 serving.
For 350 servings that's going to be an enormous cake. With fondant it would be $5 a serving at the VERY least. More if they want decorations on it
AAt $2 / serving I would loose money on the job. For a fondant covered cake my pricing starts at $4.50 / serving.
On a side note, how do you plan on getting 350 servings out of a 4 tiered cake?
CakeCentral has many detailed pricing threads. Use the search function at the top of the page. Good luck!
