Hi everyone!
Today is the 4th of July...Independence Day in the USA. We had a big lunch party including the cake pictured below. Then a bbq for dinner with leftover cake for dessert! LOL! Right now it's the in between time where we are waiting for it to get dark enough to set off fireworks!
This begins my 2 weeks in Monterey where I don my photographers hat and work on my "Hidden City" series. I'll still be around for Friday nights but this is my last cake for two weeks.
Hope everyone is great! Here is the 4th of July cake. We are near the ocean so we went with a Patriotic Sailor theme. The cake is vanilla bean cake filled with caramel toffee buttercream..SO yummy! Everything about it is hand moulded and edible!

Looks like everyone in the USA is out having fun. I'll catch up with everyone in the morning over my coffee! We had a blast tonight. We are at our younger daughter's house in Monterey and they celebrate it up BIG here. I swear it's been an hour of fireworks and it's still going on! My 3 year old grandson was quite trepidatious about them this year and we could hardly get him back inside again! One fun thing we did was use sparklers to draw designs in the air. I have a "fireworks" setting on my camera that keeps the aperature open for a few seconds and it catches the patterns of the swirling sparklers. One of the coolest things!!! Hope everyone had a great time!

Ah we would love to be allowed sparklers here! I only had a simple 8" dessert cake. It was my fresh orange cake with whipped vanilla buttercream and a plum spread filling. Client sent a text telling me how much she loved it, as it was the cake that she used to get in Chile. No matter how fancy or simple, a happy customer is always a good thing!
(by the way, I love the nautical themed USA cake you have posted!)
AUnfortunately I had to work tonight so I didn't get to make a cake or do fireworks with my daughter like I had planned. :( Next week is my grandmothers birthday and I'm thinking of doing a garden cake for her since that's one of the things we always do together. Just trying to see I if can make them out of buttercream since were not big fans of fondant
Have a great holiday all you Yanks. No pictures but I made sticky date cupcakes with whiskey ganache and sugared walnuts today. They are up there with the best cupcakes I have ever had.
AAnother busy week over here... AThis is a Red Velvet cake that I made for my sister. I have yet to perfect my writing : -( and this was my first time working with creacheese frosting and boy was it interesting and nothing like buttercream!!! However, The shell border, roses, and writing was done in buttercream.

AHope everyone is having a great weekend.
Cat love your 4th of July cake.
Cara I was impressed with your tool box cake and then I saw the globe. It is amazing!!!
I didn't get to watch the fireworks I was busy trying to finish a groom's cake for a friends wedding today. It isn't as good as I would like, but I am improving. I know my friend will like it because all he asked for was the cake.

Wow! Cara! That globe is knocking us on our butts! Amazing! How DID you do it? Is the whole thing cake? What's your support system? Dying to know!
SO much fun to come back in here on Saturday mornings and see the postings. I love the "simple" cakes as much as the fantastic ones! And I SOOOOO remember the first time I put fondant on a cake and it didn't tear!! LOL!

AHi Cat, Yes the bottom half was styrofoam, my wonderful boyfriend sorted all the structure out for me so I just had to bake the cake in a ball pan and cover! ACara that is an awesome cake...love all the beautiful cakes on here! Here's mine this week...only one! I've got a couple little ones coming up next week so be back then.

A"reenrules," what exactly is the sculpted device the sculpted kid is sitting on? I see what appears to be a Nerf logo; is it some sort of Nerf cannon?
No baking for me, this week. My dad picked up some patriotic cupcakes from the grocer. Label said buttercream frosting, but I doubt it contained much butter. Definitely not any sort of ABC I'm familiar with; I suspect some sort of meringue BC, or more likely an ersatz version thereof. Tasted OK, but not spectacular. Interesting, potentially useful, plastic picks, which I'm saving for possible re-use.
I'm planning on baking a cake for Apollo Day (July 20), since this is the 45th anniversary ("Here men from the planet Earth first set foot on the Moon. July, 1969. We came in peace for all mankind.") Just a sheet cake with some edible printing. Thankfully, all unclassified official NASA photographs are, as U.S. Government documents, implicitly Public Domain.
AFirst wedding cake for me this weekend! Excuse the leaning tower of Pisa - the stand the bride and groom provided me with was NOT strong enough (cue minor heart failure at set up time!)
Cara! How totally COOL!!! I'm so happy you took photos of the process too!
Reen, that's a very cool Nerf cake! A lot of work went into the figures!
James...I just can't do store bought cupcakes...oh my...you are braver than I. But the plastic picks are a bonus! Can't wait to see your Apollo cake!
Ana...what a gorgeous "country" wedding cake!
Sweet...love the jerseys but the wedding cake is just gorgeous!
Loved coming back in here on SUNDAY to see such lovely work!

Excuse me, are you talking about cake stand on this picture? It isn`t stable enough? The reason I ask is because I wanted to buy one of those.
AI'm still pretty new to cake decorating and still learning (mostly from this fabulous site!!), there are so SO many amazing cakes on here but here's a cake I made for my mums 60th first attempt at a ruffle ombre effect was pretty pleased with how it turned out!
@Ilovecake89 this is by far the prettiest Barbie cake I've ever seen! What is her top made out of and type of cutter did you use to make the dress layers?
Thank you @sha1col
Her top is fondant. I Just moulded it around her body, painted it with silver lustre dust (and alcohol mixture) and covered in silver glitter while the paint was still wet.
I used a rose petal cutter for the dress.
-There was glitter EVERYWHERE once I had finished! But it was very fun to make!

Yup - 'fraid not! Ultimately it probably depends on the weight of your cake - I didn't weigh mine when completed but the middle tier was a 5" high 9" round apple cake. As soon as that went on the stand it bowed so that the cake was at an angle, making the top one wonky too. My husband rolled up some napkin under the middle cake board to level it out so even if the stand was wonky at least the cake wasn't too bad (still too crooked for him though, as an engineer!). I would choose a different design if I were you... Or make a really light cake! Thanks @catlharper it was *that* theme again! Amazing cakes this week. It's going to be all thank you teacher cakes for me over the next couple of weeks. Have a good week!
