I have been asked to make a cake for a friend who is unfortunately probably celebrating his last birthday. He is big on fishing so I'd like to incorporate a fondant bass or trout on it but I can only find images or tutorials of 3D ones and for several reasons I'd like to keep it much more simple and flat (like a cupcake topper but bigger) If anyone has any pictures of something they've done or seen or can suggest a way for me to find them I'd appreciate it. I just can't seem to picture it for some reason.TIA
first of all i would soundly divorce myself from it being maybe his last birthday--that's too heavy for anyone -- and just focus on celebrating this one -- i mean as decorators we take into account the circumstances of our clients and produce something just for them but you have to let go of this one facet --
this might be a comparison--my son has cooked for super stars and super star chefs (g. ramsay just to name drop and a. ducasse said he cooked his fish perfectly) and he never got flustered nor changed the way he did anything because he did his best on each plate he served so he never needed to ramp it up -- so just do your best-- that's all we can do --
just a lot of fish:

here's one just for bass:

just for trout:
but y'know what would be cool-- picture doing a long trout then put his head sticking out one side of an 8" cake and the tail coming out the other side--so you're only actually doing a head and a tail-- you could also stick a fishing pole in the top of it and have the bait being cast onto his tail rather than at his head or something like that
maybe something like that--
Thank you so much for the links! He was diagnosed with terminal cancer and has been given only weeks. His family is having a party for him early while he is still up to it. They just decided today that they were going to do this so I have literally 2 days to come up with something and make it. I'd love to make something like you suggested but with everything else going on too I have very little time so I am hoping to keep it very basic. After looking at some of those fish I think I am starting to be able to get a clearer idea so thanks again :-)
hope you get a clear view of what you want to do and it's smooth sailing-- best to you ♥
And to you too! I don't know why I am having such a hard time thinking of this one. Sometimes it's the simplest things I guess.
What about a (closed) tackle box? Should be a simple design and it should be fun and fairly easy to make lures and worms, etc. out of fondant.
I fly with cakes for visits to my grandson and keep them simple so that they fit in the overhead, don't get too much attention from the TSA, survive pretty much anything. In doing so, I like to do 1 or 2D cut outs in fondant.
I find a pic I like in google images, blow it up to the size I need using my printer [or the really big printer at Kinkos]. I cut out the image and then "puzzle" it together out of fondant, making patterns out of image components. I start with the largest background pieces and then work out to smaller features.
A fish is pretty easy to do this way. I put it together directly on the cake and add details using edible markers, edible paint, dusts, etc. That's how I did this cake:
Shoot I wish I would have checked this sooner. Cupadeecakes that would have been a good idea. Maybenot that is more what I was originally thinking. Thank you all so much for your suggestions!!
This sounds like an emotional project - best to you and your friend.
If you really want to go simple, how about a cupcake pull-apart cake? This isn't mine - I searched Google for it - but there are many more like it, you can make it as serious or cartoon-y as you want. Make the head and tail to look like a swordfish instead of a fishbowl fish!
