Friday Night Cake Club For 6/13/14
Decorating By catlharper Updated 16 Jun 2014 , 12:36am by catlharper
AI rarely post and never on here, but this week was many firsts for me. First use of the FromScratchSF vanilla cake recipe. First pink lemonade cake. First gumpaste crown. First long transport (only one minor squished corner). And the most cake I have ever made. I did 36 choc/caramel cupcakes in three shades of pink. Then a 9" buttercream ombré ruffle cake, 6 1" layers dyed shades of pink to mat the outside. Second tier was a 6" french vanilla with sweet cream and fresh strawberries, vanilla abc and modeling chocolate polka dots in the pink shades And I could not have done it without this forum. Thank you all for your help, directly and indirectly.

Happy Birthday! Nice cake! Did you print the cards yourself, or purchased that design?
Then I just pasted them randomly into a blank green field, in GIMP, with the same aspect ratio as the maximum printable area my current edible printing supplier advertises for an $11 sheet, twisting enough of them to odd angles to make it look like they were all at odd angles, and verified that I had a full deck, then saved it as a JPEG, and emailed it to my edible printing supplier. with instructions to fill the 7x9-printable-area sheet, phoned in my MasterCard number, and drove over on my lunch break on Thursday, to pick it up.
It's available from me, on request. After all, with all the time it took me to generate the art, it would be a shame if it never appeared on another cake.

ATheir was lots of firsts making this cake! First time covering a cake in fondant (oh my lord that was nearly a disaster), first time doing quilting on a cake, first time making a gumpaste bow.
It's white chocolate mud cake filled with raspberry SMBC, covered in vanilla bean SMBC and finished in fondant.

Done! I even got an hour of sleep! Finished icing the groom's cake as we were starting to load the car.
Here's an iPhone picture; hubby spent the entire time I was finishing the details taking pictures with his good camera (he's an accomplished amateur photographer), so I can't wait to see those!
Those fondant/gumpaste ruffles were a bear!! I started with the 16", and finally got my stride about 2 strips into the 12"! Thank goodness I had gotten my KA pasta roller back from my daughter- don't think I could have done it otherwise. As it is, I spent about six hours frilling and pasting.
I have the utmost respect for you professionals that do this routinely! My two wedding cakes for family this spring have truly convinced me that this is NOT something I want to do full time!! I appreciate all the support and education you share so I can create gifts of love.
six hours >thud< that's me fainting -- it's gorgeous -- lovely lovely work and perfect coloration ;)
AReenrules, wow, what talent you have! All of your cakes are awesome! How long have you been decorating?
AThanks so much sha1col. I've been doing this for about 2 years as a part time business...completely self taught...trial and error but getting better as I go along...

Awesome! Well job well done. There's hope for me then! I just need to practice more, but grad school takes up so much of my time. Well you've inspired me to hurry up and get my homework done for today and get in my kitchen and practice, practice, practice!
Wow! Everyone! Came back in here and was blown away by the amazing job you guys did this week!
Icubed: Wow! I simply love your cake! Those ruffles had to take forever!
Mermaid! That turned out just lovely! I adore the tiara on top! Is that royal icing or fondant or??? So very pretty!
Nadiaa...love your bow...I have such issues making them look like real ribbon like yours does! So WTG with your first one!
Reen! Wow...Seriously WOW! I would love to see photos of the shower cake in place at the party if you got any! And I'm simply blown away by the US machine. How totally COOL!
Sweetshop: That 50th birthday cake is just lovely. Such clean work!
Makes me wish I had time to cake this week! Unfortunately for my caking, we have two events this week so no time for baking...lots of time for parties!

AThank you! It was pure gumpaste so it would dry quickly. I cannot believe some of the cakes on here. Definitely a level I can only aspire to. That teacup cake! And the sweet littke quilted one! Ren, the patience you must have!

So you guys have done a great job this week. I'm a little nervous posting this one after how great everyone's look. But here goes, I made this for my mom's birthday. She loves Western shirts so this was kind of a play on that. I used white modeling chocolate for all of the blue. It was my first time using the silicone molds and while it took awhile it was so much fun popping those things out. Always fun to try new things and the belt was definitely a new challenge. It's a little rough. I can usually get my icing smoother but with the chocolate it seemed like to more I messed with it the more lines I created. But overall I was pleased. Definitely learned a lot and had a lot of fun putting it together.
Hope you guys enjoyed the weekend and have a great week. -Tracy
Texas, I don't think there is a cake I work on that I don't learn something new! I love the belt buckle! What a cute idea that works to keep the feminine into the country!
BTW...I had a chocolate frosting that did that to me too...I think there was too much chocolate added to the mix and it's almost like it was freezing up! SO frustrating!
