How does one go about coloring sugar for sprinkling? I have tried putting sugar in a ziplock bag, adding food coloring and shaking it but it comes out lumpy. Please help.
I did exactly what you did Grandma Sue and got the same results. I read to do this on some professional site (I forget where), so it isn't just something we made up! I used plain decorative sugar and just a drop of yellow gel. It turned the sugar yellow quickly, but it was lumpy and wet, even after leting it sit out a while. Sorry I can't be of more help.
Thanks for the effort cookieman. As I have experienced in the last few days, an answer will be forthcoming from one of these generous people very soon.
The directions I found say to sprinkle about 1/2 cup granulated surgar evenely on the bottom of a pie plate or metal bowl, add about 5 drops food coloring and mix thoroughly. To be sure the color is evenly distrubuted, push the sugar through a fine sieve. Spread on the pie plate or baking sheet and let dry about 15 min. Haven't tried it but it sounds about right to me. (found it on Home Cookin index-therecipereader.com)
What you do may be a "little thing" but "little things" add to alot!
I put sugar in a ziplock bag add a little paste food coloring and shake. It worked fine. If there is a clump of paste food color left you can pick that out.
Another thing that you could maybe try is something that I've seen that you can use for salt.
Take the sugar (or salt), pour it out on a flat surface (like a cookie sheet), take a piece of chalk and rub it over the sugar (or salt)- and this colors the sugar (or salt).
