Im new to this site so I just want to introduce myself 1st. I am new to baking but love to bake.
My daughter has her 1 yr birthday coming up and I asked to take on the task of making her cake.
Does anyone have any SIMMPLE, BASIC, YUMMY frosting recipes?
Im just looking for basic vanilla or chocolate and add maybe some food coloring.
We would like to to be soft and maybe fluffy as we want her to get messy when she eats it.
Any suggestion please?

frldyz, my basic buttercream recipe is:
140g/ 5oz butter (softened)
280g/ 10oz icing sugar
1-2 tbsp milk
but if you want really soft and fluffy, add marshmallow fluff (you could make it yourself if you like- pretty easy). Recipe for Marshmallow fluff can be found in the recipe section of this site.

Why not add food coloring? Unless there are allergies or you don't want the poo to be colored (blue from blue icing for example) then it's fine. Good luck with the cake, I'll be making my son's 1st birthday cake too (in a year) with blue icing so my hubby sees blue poo when he changes the diaper . A simple, soft fluffy icing I've used is this one member enga posted on this thread: http://cakecentral.com/t/769608/grocery-store-frosting-recipe. It came out really tasty, not sure about decorations with it though. Well, start out with the minimum liquid and add more if needed. For decorations, I'm told you want it a bit stiff.
Fluffy Crusting BC
Amount
Ingredient
2 Cups
Shortening
8 Cups
Powdered Sugar
1/2 tsp
Salt
2 tsp
Clear Vanilla Extract
1 tsp
Butter Flavor
1/8 tsp
Almond Extract (optional)
6 Ounces
Heavy Whipping Cream
Directions:
In stand mixer, layer ingredients as follows: Shortening, sugar, salt, flavorings, and then cream. Mix on low until liquid is incorporated, then turn up to high and continue mixing for 8-10 minutes.
Edit: 6 ounces of heavy whipping cream is about 3/4 cup, start with 1/4cup and add more if you need it :)
You go girl. I was under the impression the fc was going into the frosting fluff so the baby could make a nice mess. Its just personal really with some people not wanting artificial stuff going into babies. Perhaps the OP meant a natural food colouring?They have such a short window when we can control the amount of chemicals the wee souls ingest......but it was only my humble opinion and how lovely you have a new wee baby. Congratulations?
Ha ha, thanks cakebaby2, had mine 6 weeks ago, so if my posts are a bit weird that's why (lack of sleep and coffee, lols). And yes, some food colorings are safer than others, so if OP is worried about that, he can check out his local health food stores, they usually have the more natural stuff. Speaking of which, you may be able to substitute butter for the shortening in that recipe too, haven't tried it yet though.
Off topic though, it does burn my britches that there is so much un-needed stuff in food these days >:(
Edit: using clear extracts just means your icing will come out whiter than if you used the usual brown ones. Also, if you're going to use shortening, you can find butter-flavored Crisco (name brand vegetable shortening) which works well :)

Here's a silly ? ( remember Im new...)
It says shortening. I use Crisco sticks. Do I want the Crisco all vegetable shortening? Or Crisco butter flavored shortening?
powdered sugar?
Do I sift?
As for flavoring. an I use any flavor of my choice?
How long can I keep in the fridge before I spread it?
myself for a one year old, i would use a lemony powdered sugar glaze made with water on a nice little vanilla pound cake--

in fact if i had some grandkids i'd be all set--i have a nordic train pan and a rose shaped muffin pan--all i need to complete the recipe is some grandkids--ok even one would do! lol
