AMy niece was a cake for graduation that has fondant ropes, belts and anchors... Trying to add a picture! I have never used fondant before and would like to make only the decorations to place on the buttercream, is that possible? Can I make the ropes and things ahead of time since my daughter is getting married the same week? YIKES!!!!

AYou can attach fondant decorations to buttercream, just put a little water on the side of the decoration that will be attached to the cake. The water will make the fondant sticky and act as a glue.

What brand of fondant are you using? Some fondant gets hard if left out, so if you make the decorations in advance, they may not be flexible when you put them on the cake. This could cause the decorations to crack.

AI am planning on making my own marshmallow fondant, it's the only thing I've ever tried! Do you have a suggestion for one that would keep better? I still can't get a picture to post:(. Thanks for your reply!

AI can't get pictures to ever post either!

If you make the decorations in advance I would wrap them in saran wrap (plastic wrap) and put them in an air tight container. That will help them stay soft and not dry out.

I have only used MMF for deco (never to cover a cake) and it works just fine. I always make mine about a week ahead and if I want it to stay flexible I loosely wrap it in plastic wrap then put it in a zipper bag and then into an airtight container. When I add the deco I very lightly mist either the cake or the bottom of the piece I'm working with before putting it on the cake. Good luck :-)
