Help Dad Ordered & Ex Wife Upset

AI did an oder of 150 cupcakes ($20 a each dozen) & a 13 x 9 cake ($25). This was for a graduation party. The dad is the one that contacted me, sat down & went over the details, & paid me. I found out when I delivered it that I spelled the name wrong it's drue instead of drew. Now this is the 1st time this has happened & I should have verified the name. We decided to just take the name off. The dad & ex wife were polite about it when I fixed it. Now the mom is going on face book & trashing me & having other people contact me complaining about the cake. I text the dad who's my customer, she had nothing to do with the ordering & paying. I apologized over & over about the name, he even admitted he should have given me the spelling since it's different. He never complained to me about the cake. I even told him I would give him a free dozen cupcakes. Someone told me the mom is upset because it's not what "they" ordered & I need to refund "them". Now again she had nothing to do with this & he wanted a basic cake. People are posting on my Facebook & texting me how it looks terrible. I finally told one person who I know that besides the name being spelled wrong this is the cake he wanted& if the ex wife wanted something fancy she should have ordered it. Her son who I know said I didn't put any effort into it like my other cakes. I put just as much effort into this cake as my others, the difference is the other cakes I've been doing have fondant & detailed because that's what the customers order. This customer told me he didn't want anything fancy. I asked someone if it tasted bad & they said they didn't know they just saw a picture of the cake. This is the first time this has happened & I just don't know what to do?

We need a pic of cake and cupcakes to judge..

I would block those people on fb from your page, so they cant post anything.

If the dad ordered a super simply cake there is nothing you can do about it..

Do you have a contract? emails? something that can show what he really ordered?

you should talk only with your customer, which was the dad, not his ex wife.

ANormally I go through emails, but this time I did it face to face. I'm not letting it bother me anymore. The dad was happy with the order & he's the customer & that's what matters. She didn't complain about the cupcakes, just the cake. I told the dad I would give him a free dozen cupcakes for spelling the name wrong. I'm getting forms to fill out & have the customer sighn for now on.

I agree, we do need a picture.  And when someone asks me for something "simple" I always get confused.  Everyone has a different definition of simple when it comes to cakes.

AI showed him an example of a cake similar to the one I did & he said that was what he wanted. I think the thing that upset me the most is people saying I put no effort into it & looked terrible. You guys know as cake bakers you always put effort into cakes. I think people would have said different comments if the mom wasn't trash talking the cake & me.

AAlso what would you guys to in the case of not spelling the name correct? Would you give them a partial refund of the cake? I'm giving him a free order of cupcakes & he was fine with that.

simple usually means anything but simple--sorry you're in a pickle -- sounds like a communication snafu huh--since you've already apologized profusely i'd not apologize again --

 

and if the paying customers aren't complaining what can you do -- i guess just move on people will calm down and move on themselves -- you offered some cupcakes -- done

AAnd people who decide to give their kids ridiculous names also bear some responsibility to make sure the name is recorded right on the paperwork. Assuming there was paperwork, because it's flat out irresponsible to take orders without it.

They told you his name was 'Drue' but didn't spell it for you? That's a bit nuts. Every reasonable person under the sun would assume that it was spelled 'Drew'. Which your customer obviously realised, since he didn't complain about it.

 

It doesn't sound like ex-wife is going to be your customer any time soon, so block her and forget it. Sounds like you made what was ordered, so forget about it.

I bet it also has a lot to do with the ex-wife/mother having a dig at her ex-husband, more so than the cake. It's like a "look how useless he is, he ordered this... etc etc", so by involving you in it, she using it as a tangible complaint. If that makes sense?

 

Block everyone that said anything nasty, and let it die down. People will get bored of her ranting anyway.

AI don't know what you mean about not knowing what to do. The mom didn't order a cake from you. She has nothing to do with you. You have an immature person with no dignity posting crazy stuff on your Facebook page. And her trashy friends. These are not people you want to do business with unless you're Jerry Springer.

I agree, you got caught up in a family spat. Your customer was never going to please his ex-wife and by default, you were also going to lose. At this point, just grit your teeth and delete/ban these nasty people from your Facebook page. Eventually the family will move on to other fights. They all need to be placed on your No Cake for You list.

You can't fix crazy!!!  I agree with the others block these people from your Facebook after you explain to them that the Dad was your customer and not the ex-wife...  It sounds like she's got BSC issues and you can't do squat about that.  It almost sounds like she wanted to order some extravagant cake and have him pay for it..  Also, anyone who names their kid a "common spelling" name then spells it goofball bares the responsibility to say "spelled ______".  For the future, the name could be Jill and you ask "And because I've had issues in the past, what spelling shall I use?"  Because you never know, "Jylle" or "Jell" could be how it's spelled!
