Hi everyone. I am making a two tiered cake tomorrow and each tier is going to be taller than I normally make them. I normally do two layers and torte and fill them, but this time I am going to do 3 layers for each tier and just fill them without torte-ing the layers. Each layer is 2 inches, so essentially I guess the tiers will be 1 1/2 barrel cakes, if that is a thing. Will I be able to do this without extra support? I don't want to run into any problems. Of course I will do the normal stacking support between the tiers, I just need to know if I can do an approximately 6 inch tall cake without extra support in the tier. Hope that makes sense. Thanks!!

I'd say you'd be safe...a 6 inch cake isn't very heavy at all, and that added layer really won't add much to it.  If you are not comfortable, add and extra straw, dowel or whatever you use for support.

I say it will be fine without the extra support. Most of my cakes end up being about 5 inches tall after torting and filling. Not sure what type of filling you're using, but I would put something a little heavy on top of the cake (like a tile or book) after it's all stacked to help settle the layers that way it'll be less likely to create bulges with the added weight of an extra cake layer. Unless that's what you do anyway! :)
