Did you see the Carlo's Bakery (Cake Boss) Wrigley Field cake they made for the baseball field's 100th anniversary?

They said it took 5 bakers several days to make it, and it weighted 400 lbs.  The cake was displayed at the field on Wednesday April 22, and then at a celebration afterward at a museum.  Then photos surfaced of the cake in a dumpster.  People have been outraged -- how dare they waste all that good cake by throwing it away??

But take a look at the photo of the cake in the dumpster.  You know what? The whole thing is styrofoam (polystyrene) and cardboard!  No cake to be found.  They claim there was some cake in there -- maybe it is like a fake wedding cake with an insert for real cake so the bride and groom can cut it.

Do you think it was right for them to present this as real cake when it wasn't?  Do you think many of the Cake Boss huge cakes they make on the show are fake like this?  (I've never understood how they throw layers of cake around they way they do... those cakes can't be tender).

Here's the photo in the dumpster

Nothing about Cake Boss or the media surprises me. The cake was needed as a prop. Promos about how long it took all those bakers, is just PR. Maybe the average clueless citizen would be outraged, but us savvy CakeCentral members?

dueceofcakes I don't think that many people know that it's all a fakeee  cakeee.  And how in the world can little folks try to make something similar out of real food?  the answer is that we can't.

It was more than a little enjoyable to read the articles and the lashing feedback posts condemning the scam.

Now wait…its styrofoam covered in fondant and gum paste? still impressive, right? meaning, thats ALLLL competition cakes are these days. I, personally, am rarely impressed when I find out any cake is styrofoam as I think the hardest part of caking is the structure….but, many people here on this site praise the dummy cake…so why the backlash towards CakeBoss?

This explains a lot thought..I mean I wouldn't say I was an avid watcher of the show; but my Mom certainly like it, and the few times that I've watched with her I have thought WTF how did they manage that! I wouldn't never call myself some sort of cake guru, but I am no novice either and some of the things they do did make me question weather or not it was real cake they are using. I mean it always shows them "making a cake" and they claim it is cake; but the logistics of some of the stuff they do always seemed questionable to me. Like the goalie cake they made "out of real cake". I remember watching that episode with my Mom and it just didn't quite add up..and maybe this is why..its Styrofoam, which I'm not saying I have a problem with. I just think they should let people know..that way maybe the public will stop demanding these impossible cakes..for no more than $200!

Oh I think I understand….we aren't upset about the styrofoam, we're upset about the lie….that makes sense!

Well I don't particularly like the lie..I think it sets unrealistic expectations for the public; but I also agree with your previous comment a lot of the hard work comes from actually making a cake.

It's called Cake Boss not Styrofoam Cake Boss..

You know, FioreCakes it's just possible that everyone at Wrigley Field knew full well that it was just a display cake.  They may have never intended it to be cut and eaten and they were simply embarrassed when the Styrofoam cake was exposed to the public in the dumpster.

It wasn't thrown out until after the whole charity even was over, according to the articles.  IDK

AI shared this on my page yesterday, and am just amazed at how personally some people took this "travesty", like they're genuinely upset that it happened. Go look..Seriously, the comments are just...entertaining really. ;)

I'm not outraged about the fake cake. I was annoyed that Cake Boss got so much acclaim and praise from it while both the museum that tossed the fake cake and the Cubs baseball team got widely panned for wasting food and had to apologize for tossing "perfectly good" cake in the trash.  Of course they all knew it was fake. But Buddy comes out looking like a cake genius when really, in this case, he's just great with a glue gun. (Oh yeah, and self promotion.  He's a certified genius at self promotion.)  Before the event, news reports said the cake was going to be eaten at the party at the museum, but that was a lie. That's what they should have apologized for: Lying. On the bright side, at least no food (other than fondant) was wasted.

Duff made a Yankee Stadium cake that was actually made out of cake (they showed it in progress in a video).  Mike McCarey has made some jaw-dropping cakes that are really cake, too.  That takes a lot more talent than decorating styrofoam.

You know what else is an amazing-looking cake? Michelangelo’s “David.” Only thing is, it’s mostly made of inedible material. Same goes for the incredible, 100-year-old, full-scale Wrigley Field cake the Cubs play their home games in.

HAHAHA!

Right?! I have some interesting peeps on my page. I approach them cautiously most times. I don't know where they came from or why my page is so dang interesting apparently, but man do I have some downright wacky things in my messages and on my wall.

they were danged if they did and danged if they didn't--some of it was 6 days old--you can't serve that to hardly anyone especially sick kids--then it sat outdoors on display all day (if i'm reading it right) and they decided to not serve the edible portion--i think buddy did a good job to fulfill the order with a wink and a nod to all the circumstances--why make all cake if it's not all gonna be served--but part of it was cake it says so some of it was edible at one time--

all of us would do that for a big whonking order sometimes if it met the need better--displayed outdoors--oh sure we would

What I really want to know is---- did the guy who posted the picture get fired? He probably just took it to show his friends and it went viral! You gotta watch everything you do nowadays!

A"The edible portion" could have just been the fondant covering the styrofoam and the figures...as if anyone was going to eat those anyway!

I find it disheartening how much stock people put into the "reality" part of reality tv. Even non-reality tv I think, dupes the general public a frightening amount.
