Hello, everyone!! Wilton has a new fondant out, supposedly better tasting and softer. As anyone tried it? How does it fare?  I don't like much Wilton's fondant taste but I did love working with it when covering a cake.

Has anyone tried the new Wilton fondant?  How does it fare?

Thanks!

PS:  My friend has tried Satin Ice and doesn't like it because it cracks after it dries.  That has been her experience with it.

Hmmm.... I was wondering why all the shelves were empty. I hope that it still drys nice & hard.  I don't use Wilton to cover anything that needs to be eaten (I use MMF) but I do love to use it for sculpting, flowers, etc - it is cheap, drys fast, colors great, airbrushes great....

I've used Wilton Fondant on my cakes before (not do too many) but I love to work with it. Granted, its not the best tasting, but it has never failed when I have worked with it.

AIalways used wilton to make any of my decorations because it dried so nicely. The new fondant, not so much. It does taste so much better though. I am covering some cakes with it today to see how it works. Im not a big fan of satin ice as it cracks after drying on the cake. Hopefully it works good! quote name="dukeswalker" url="/t/774052/new-wilton-fondant-is-on-sale#post_7507848"]Hmmm.... I was wondering why all the shelves were empty. That would be fantastic! Please let us know how works.  I will be experimenting with it hopefully next week. I need to make a cake for my daughter.

Thank you for your feedback.

ASo, I used it yesterday to cover two of my cakes and had no problems. I believe I will start using it all the time. I normally use mmf but just don't want to make it anymore. I've been experimenting with different brands, taste is my biggest concern. I did a taste test with my husband and 2 kids with rhe new wilton and the satin ice. They didn't know which was which, they all said the wilton smelled better, wilton tasted better, but they all said the satin ice texture was better and I have to agree. It gets a little gummy.

The fondant is really good but I find it way too expensive for such a small amount (it costs 17,99$ in Canada for 24oz). Virgin Ice makes amazing fondant and it costs the same price but I get 64oz of fondant.

Really?  Awesome.  Can I ask:  Did you color it?  My friend used it yesterday and totally hated it.  She said it was way too soft and it was developing wholes.  I will post a pic of what she sent me.  I wanted to try it for myself though and how it takes color. She said that the new Wilton fondant didn't take color as well as the older fondant, which was more vibrant.  I wonder if it was because she used so much red coloring and maybe needed to add some powdered sugar to help it out.  I definitely need to test it myself.

I am glad it worked for you, georgiacakelady.  The only thing my friend liked about it too was the taste.  Can't wait to try it. I may get some today.  :)

Thanks for the feedback.

Awesome!! I can't wait to try it myself.  I need to use strong colors like reds to see how it works too.  IT didn't work well for my friend.

AI agree, it doesn't take color guite as well and you do have to add a lot of powdered sugar. But I did color some black and red. I use americolor so I don't know if that makes a difference. I will post pics of the 3 cakes I used it on if I can figure out how to, I'm new to posting on this site :)

AI used it on 2 cakes this week, one was a very large wedding cake and it took so much longer. It tastes better, but it is way to soft! It tears very easily on the edges and I got lots more air bubbles and holes. You have to use a lot of powdered sugar with it!

AIt does get gummy when color is added but it still wasn't too bad

This picture  is the one my friend sent me after she colored her fondant. You can see all the "pores" in the fondant.  I told her to add more powder sugar but she was frantic so I don't think she listed to me!

Thank you for the feed back ladies! Please keep it coming.

I bought a small box with a 50% off coupon from Joann's and am going to "play" with it as soon as I can.  I was able to get some of the "old" fondant at SuperWalmart and bought the big box to keep it just in case.

Very nice, georgiacakelady!! The black came out very smooth.  You said that you had to use powdered sugar, right?  Lots of? of just some?

AYes, lots of powdered sugar cause it was very sticky. To roll it, I used a piece of vinyl with a little powdered sugar on it and just kept putting a light coat of it on top of the fondant and on the fondant roller. Then I rolled it up on the roller and laid on the cake. Definitely do not use shortening with it. I tried that and it made it way too soft and I noticed the first pieces I colored almost looked like they were melting after they sat awhile. I had them in a separate bag

Wow, thank you so much for all the information, ladies.  Have you send any comments to Wilton?  After I use it, I am sending them an email or calling them to let them how what they have done to this fondant.  My goodness!! All they needed to do was to change the taste and just leave the texture alone!

I will use the one I bought with a small cake I am going to make for my sister in law and I will post my experience with it.

I use The Mat to roll mine so I don't need Crisco to knead it much, although I use it originally when I need it on the counter.  But I won't, since you have told me this.

Thank you so much for your comments!! It really helps.

I recently tried the new Wilton Fondant when I ran out of my Fondx Elite Fondant. And I have to say that it does taste significantly better but as for consistency it was way too soft for my liking. It took a while for me to cover my cake. As much as like the price, I'm sticking to Fondx and waiting for caljava's next fondant sale : )

I did this Dora cake this weekend for my granddaughter, I purchased the pink and purple Wiltons Decorators choice fondant, the flavor was decent and it worked like a charm.  In the past i've made MMF and I've tried satin ice (SI was to soft and a nightmare for me to work with) home made MMF is great if you have the extra time. I would certianly use the new Wilton fondant again.

Really? so it worked very well for you?  Did you add more powdered sugar to it? It seems to work better when you do, according to the ladies that have already used it.

Nope I simply used it out of the box, I use The Mat when rolling my fondant so maybe that was why I had no issues, the stuff worked amazing for me.

**Thank you, the cake was lots of fun to make and seems I have more GrandSons then GrandDaughers doing pink and purple is a treat for me. :)

Awesome, Mattie2013.  I also have the Mat.  My friend has The Mat and used it but she has a different one, not the same I have.  So I will try it with nothing and see what happens. Thank you so much for your comments.

Well, ladies.. I finally got to "play" with the new Wilton fondant.  I just saw another thread where someone else was having issues with it.  I will go visit there too and leave my comments.

I have to say that I liked it.  I just takes some getting used to it and modifying some things you could do with the other fondant that you cannot do with this one.

I will summarize it in a list:

New Fondant Wilton (My observations)

1.  Make sure you cover cake very well with buttercream.  This new fondant is very soft and will show any imperfections underneath.  I will try to roll it thicker next time.  But being that it is soft, it will "cling" to the cake more and show any imperfections underneath.

2.  I didn't use Crisco like with the older fondant to knead it.  I actually just kneaded it on top of The Mat, which I use to roll it out, and it worked beautifully.

3.  It took color very nicely, but make sure that you use powdered sugar like you would any other fondant.  It gets very sticky.

4.  It took me a little longer the cake because it is soft. Be very careful.  Its soft and it will dent easily.

That's about it.  So in summary:

1. Roll thicker

2.  Don't use Crisco when kneading

3. Cover cake well with buttercream ( I am used to using a very thin coat of buttercream underneath)

I hope this helps those working with it.  I will copy this and paste it on the other board.

Thank you so much for sharing your findings and pictures with me ladies.  It really helped me in my experience using it.

Here's a pic of the cake I did.  I used the dots to cover the imperfections showing through the fondant.  :)
