AMy baby's first birthday is in august, and I would like to bake her cake.
I would like to bake something like this: (Image from bulidingabakery.blogspot.com)
Since I am very inexperienced baker (in fact I just started baking) I need will the help you can give me.
I have baked four different cake recipes, and so far the one I like the better is the cake mix extender I found here. So I plan to bake that one, and use pastry cream as filling.
I also made my first buttercream icing. I used indydebi's recipe, because I need a buttercream that stand the heat, but the buttercream I made was very grainy and too sweet. I think a followed completely the recipe, but I don't know what went wrong. Can somebody give me an input of what can I do to get a better buttercream or recommend another buttercream recipe that will stand the heat.
Also, should I use wooden dowels or fat boba straws for support? I am baking a 10", 8", and 6" tiers.
Thanks in advance for any recommendation, help or input.
Everything you asked is really a matter of preference...hard to say what you should do. Indydebi's buttercream is made to be sweet, you can cut the sweet by adding a bit of salt, but an american buttercream is generally very sweet. If you switch to a less sweet, butter based icing then it will not stand up to the heat. Boba or dowels? both work great if you know how to properly stack...look up youtube videos or search for advice here on this website. Best of luck!
AStraws will likely be easier since you have scissors to cut them, but possibly not clippers to cut the dowels.
AThank you. I am going to bake and decorate a trial cake, and stack it with straws and see how things work out.
