AI have been a cake decorator for years (whew, saying that made me count... It's been 27 years that I've been decorating professionally - if that doesn't make me feel old...) I don't do it for a living anymore, haven't in years, but I still do cakes for friends' weddings, showers, big events. I keep my skills up and someone gets a great gift. I taught the Wilton Method for several years and I've taught private classes for friends. I'm very comfortable teaching, in fact, I love doing it. My decorated cookies were featured on an HGTV show (my claim to fame, hahaha). So resume aside, here's my question: I want to donate 2 items to a silent auction for a local charity I'm involved with. I think 1 package would include 2 private cake decorating lessons, 3 hours each. I'll work with the winner of the package to determine what she/he wants to learn (basics, fondant, gum paste, whatever). The second package will be a cookie class/party for up to 10 people. They'll learn my secrets for baking perfect cookies every time, all sorts of decorating, etc. both packages are for adults only. Does anyone have any tips for me about doing something like this? Also, I have to put a 'value' on each package...any thoughts on how to charge for private lessons? Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to offer!!:-)

AHi. Great idea. Maybe make up certificates thst they can see when bidding. You could include some decorated cookies to help reel in bids. Also. Be sure to put an expiration date on the cert ans a monetary value. I love silent auctions. Our club did one

It might be best to just have a one day private class, as well as the one day group class.

When It's for charity, simple is good.  and love the idea of having a few of your beautiful decorated cookies for a teaser.   Good luck

:)

You need to set the parameters. Think about what you would enjoy teaching and narrow the options that you offer recipients. Otherwise, your gift/donation can end up as a not-so-much-fun class for the teacher.

AThank you for the replies! I do intend to make up gift certificates and also a photo collage of cakes and such as a "tangible" kind of thing that people can see at the event. I may even make up a basket containing some basic supplies, spatulas, tips, bags, gel colors, etc. Sprinkles and sparkles for the cookie class with a cute apron, deco bags, pretty copper cookie cutters, etc.

I really need to come up with a 'value' for these. Any idea what the going rate is for private lessons -maybe by the hour?

Oh, I also intend to include parameters, no kids, expiration date, based on teacher availability (with at least 2 weeks advanced notice req), etc.
