AI am using a chocolate crusting buttercream recipe that calls for meringue powder. (Here's the recipe http://cakecentral.com/a/crusting-chocolate-fudge-buttercream-icing)
However, New York City obviously has a meringue powder cartel, probably operating out of an abandoned warehouse in Queens, guarded by scary men with assault rifles.
That is the only reason I can come up with for my inability to find MP anywhere.
Food Emporium? Nope. Gristede's? Nada. Westside Market? Nothing. Zabar's? Zip. Fairway? No luck.
We don't have costcos or walmarts here.
My question: is there a substitute I can use? What would happen if I left it out all together?
Thanks!
have you tried a hobby store like micheals, hobby lobby or joann fabrics?
Those are the only places I have any luck finding MP
Hmmmm. We don't have Hobby Lobby or a Joann's, but we did just get a Michaels-- I'll go check it out tonight! Thanks for the tip!
cakelove - I wound up going to Michaels to get it... then the next day the news announced they had their customer's credit card numbers stolen. Oy! (tuns out there are no weird charges on my cad, so I guess I'm okay.)
I would be getting a new credit card with a new number. They don't necessarily use them straight away. Sometimes they hang on to them for months or on sell them. That's what I was told anyway last time I had mine done. Twice now and it is a real pain.
Meringue powder is basically powdered egg whites with some starches and maybe some gums in it. You can go get some Just Whites brand dried egg whites at the grocery store and it will work just fine.
But for that particular recipe you don't really need it at all, you generally don't need meringue powder in icing recipes that have shortening in them.
oh crap -- thanks for the heads up cazza1.... it seems like no store is secure anymore...
