My sister has asked me to make a "fish" cake. I think her preference is to have the cake actually shaped like a fish, but I am looking at everything trying to get some ideas. I have looked at the cakes in the gallery and was just wondering if there are any other ideas out there that haven't been posted?

I recently did a fish on a platter cake..it is posted in the gallery too. Another one that is cute is on the cover of Colette Peters' book. It has an ocean look to it and is border with little fish and baked in the petal pan! It's really cute!

This one is made of fondant and painted with food coloring, then just laid on the cake. Easy because the fish can be done ahead of time

There are some really awesome fish cakes in the gallery under the August contest. I think someone mentioned step by step directions in one of Colette Peter's books.

Good luck!

I did a Nemo fish and cut it out of pound cake. You could make a pattern and then decorate it however you wanted. I stacked mine on top of a sheet cake. Good luck!

Thanks for the ideas. I called the library today to see if they had a copy of Colette Peters... The Art of Cake Decorating. They did not but had 2 of her other books which were both out. I don't have a set deadline for when my sister needs the fish cake, so I don't feel pressured and have time to really think about what I want to do. I think this will be a fun challenge. I like to try things I have never done before.

I love a cake challenge too! The Colette cake is really pretty self explanatory...you really don't need the book! Just carve a sheet cake into a fish shape, cover it with fondant, make indentations for the scales, cut out pieces of fondant for the fins and tails and paint with silver/blue luster dust.

You can use a football cake pan as the shape of the fish and then use frosting to shape the fins....I did a Nemo cake it's in my photos. Good luck!

I have decided to try a combination of the suggestions that I have received. I am making a clown fish. I found a poster on line of a clown fish to use as a guide. I purchased a football pan to use as the body of the fish. (used 50% off coupon at Michaels). I plan to try using fondant for the fins and to shape the mouth. My questions now are --- Can I paint on the fondant? The fins will need to a continuation of the colors on the body of the fish, which are orange and black. My other question is how do I attach the fins to the cake? I plan to ice the body of the fish with BC.

If you make the fondant thick enough you can attach it to the cake with toothpicks. Or you can cut the shape out of cardboard or styrofoam and wrap that with fondant...that way it sticks up high enough and it gives that 3-D effect. You can paint fondant. There is a product from Wilton that is called "Brush on Color". It is really cool, I have used it before. I have only found it at Michaels however...so hopefully you have it at your local store too. Good luck, can't wait to see the final cake.

Thanks for all of the help and suggestions. I finished the "fish" cake on Thursday and delivered it to my sister that evening. She took it to work on Friday and called me to say it was a big hit. I did use the football pan to get the shape of the body and cut another cake to give me the shape of the tail and fins. It turned out cute. I used a picture of a clown fish as a guide and the cake ended up looking like Nemo. I forgot to take a picture of the cake so unfortunately I don't have one to post.
