AHi all. I'm new to this and hoping ye might be able to help me. I want to make an 8 inch cake but I would like it to be 3 or 4 inches in height. Can anyone tell me how I go about this?? Do I make two 8 inch cakes and stack them on top of each other or is there a more Cust saving way of doing it?? Any help would be so greatly appreciated from those with experience Thanks in advance

Nearly all my cakes are 4 inches in height by the time I have torted and filled.

Assuming you bake your batter in two pans and thus have two cakes- cut each cake in half either with a large serrated knife or cake slicer, so you end up with 4 cakes. Fill each layer with about 1/4" high of filling or more- you will have 3 layers of filling. Once you have covered the cake as well- with the top covered with 1/4" of buttercream or ganache (whatever you are using), the cake should end up being 4" high.

AHi petitecat

So when you make an 8 inch recipe do u pour it into two tins??? Think this is what I'm missing?? Or do u upscale the ingredients.. I baked an 8 inch cake but it was only about two inches if even when it was cooked.. Struggling with this element

It does sound as if that recipe isn't enough so yes double it and pour into two tins :)

and yes in my case I always pour into two tins. Some people bake in one tin, but they would have to be very deep tins and unless you are used to it, can be difficult to get an even bake. I'm happy baking in two tins!
