I know this has been posted about before and I have read loads of posts on this but wondering if there were any new ideas out there!

I'm making a red buttercream rose cake and am going to need a lot of red gel colour (I have the Wilton no taste red) to get the desired shade.

I want to try and avoid staining of the teeth and tongue as much as possible as I have read that there is no way to avoid it altogether.

I have never tried the PME red lustre spray do you think it would give the desired red shade (proper red rose) if I coloured the buttercream a deep pink instead (less colour)...?

Im doing a tall 10" round cake covered in roses so will try to ice the base white and then just do the red roses on top.

Any tips would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks in advance

Natalie

I would do a test on a smear of pink icing before making your roses, then you'll know if it will give the color you want. Although with luster spray, they will sparkle/shimmer.

I have posted before about my method of "blooming" color in IMBC, I imagine it would work in other types of BC too.

Remove about 1/4 cup of BC from your batch and add lots of gel color too it, stir it, and microwave it until its melted but not hot. The color will deepen a lot. then you can use this to color the rest of your batch and it will use less color. As far as staining teeth, I think that's going to happen no matter how you achieve red, even with airbrushing.

What about using RI roses? you would prepare them in advance and let them dry, place on your BC cake. People would be less likely to eat them since they would be hard.
