I'm sorry if this question is a big duh but I have been puzzling over this for ages. When I use zest in cakes or I candy peel for the top of cupcakes I have to go out and buy the oranges use the zest and then figure out what to do with the rest of the orange.
I guess what I am asking is there another means to acquire orange zest without creating a zest less orange stockpile? A store, a method, something? Sorry again if this question seems like an obvious answer.
ANothing tastes as good as fresh squeezed orange juice. I always make juice from my naked oranges. If I zest lemons I freeze the juice in ice cube trays to use later.
I do the same thing. I also do it with limes, that way I always have some fresh/frozen juice to use later. My husband usually beats me to the orange juice because he loves the fresh juice, but I've also frozen that before and used when making orange chicken or some other dish that needed some orange juice. Definitely beats running to the store to get manufactured juices.
You could check the spice aisle, I can get lemon or orange peel from there, granted it's chopped up, but it works for when I do regular cooking (mostly cause I'm lazy and don't want to scrub the wax off the oranges then grate them).
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I was thinking freeze the juice as well but my budget conscious voice said that drinking it would just be wasting money and knock up product cost all for a little bit of zest. What I need is a zest fairy that produces perfect slices of ready to use zest on command.
But will definitely check the spice isle see if I get lucky on something I can use for decoration.
