How Do I Create This Shading?

A[IMG]http://cakecentral.com/content/type/61/id/3215055/width/200/height/400[/IMG] Can someone advise on how to do the coloring on this cake? Airbrushed findant? I dont have an airbrush machine....And the lanterns...what medium to use to paint those. I am in a dry county so I cannot use vodka.

It does look airbrushed to me.  I haven't tried it, but I wonder if blue petal dust over a purple fondant would work if airbrushing is not an option.  For the lanterns, if you want to paint them, you could mix the color with clear vanilla or lemon extract.

If it ever comes up again, I would mix the colors in the fondant and then roll it out just before the colors get all blended together into one color. Kind of like a marbling effect but with similar colors.
