AHi everyone, I want to make an open book bible for my mums 70th birthday and was thinking of either doing two rectangle Madeira cakes (one for each side of the book) and carving out so it's book shaped, or one rectangle and carving both sides out of that. I'm assuming I can sort of fold the fondant on top so it looks a bit page like and put a fondant ribbon in the middle to hide where the spine would be, but how do I do the pages on the side of the cake in fondant? Surely if I comb it it will drag and split? I could so butter cream but thought it wouldn't look as good? Unusually there isn't that much on you tube that is helpful?? Also if I'm painting the page edges gold which is the best paint to use, gold dust mixed with rejuvenating fluid?? And finally I want to write on the pages - would you use a licorice pen or icing?? I need the cake finished this Saturday so any help would be fab xxx

Jessica Harris has a great blogpost about making a book cake on her site

I carved one from a large rectangle once, then found the Wilton book pan for another.  I used the idea of creating a template to use to shape the top, then used rice paper for the top page.
