I am trying to make wired calyxes for cherry blossoms, and every time I try, the ball of gumpaste, or Mexican hat shape, just falls apart. I have kneaded shortening into the gumpaste, and also a dab of water, to try to make it grab the wire, but no luck.
I have lots of blossoms to do for a cherry branch. I have a mold for the blossoms, so no worries there. I just can't get these bases!
Any suggestions are welcome!
Yes- both covered with floral tape and uncovered. The ball of gumpaste just breaks into pieces. I also tried just forming a ball around the hook, rather than trying to insert it and pull it thru.
I have been working with Wilton premade gumpaste. Would I be better off using a fondant ball, or fondant with tylose powder?
ADo you have gum glue--gumpaste dissolved in hot water or tylose glue? Also, if the gumpaste is falling apart, is it dried out or too soft? I have not had any problems with the wilton premade.
I am using some gumpaste that I colored about two weeks ago, then stored in wrap and ziplock. I thought it had kneaded up pretty well, but maybe I'll try a fresh bit. I actually am OK with all white blossoms, or can use just a touch of color after.
Oh, and yes on the gum-glue.
Thank you, both! I will try adding a bit of fondant on my next trial. Six weeks till the wedding!
What wire are people using for flowers? Cloth-covered? Plain? Florist tape covered? What gauge?
Thanks!
