ASo, I'm just getting into the whole Fondant thing. I took all 3 courses of the Wilton Cake classes and love decorating. Now, I'm intrigued to try the Fondant Figures I see being done. I want to try and see if I can grab that talent.

My question - these are mainly just 'decoration' for a cake right? No one really eats them? What happens after that - are they savable? Or just have to get thrown away after some time?

Thanks

Hi,

I specialise in marzipan and sugar paste figurines.  Some people keep them, but many do eat them.  I made a figure of a friend on his birthday cake at the weekend, we all took great delight in fighting for pieces of him. LOL.

If someone wants to keep them, keep in a clear box or even a biscuit tin (air tight is better).  Spraying with a glaze, or even hairspray will help them to keep their colour. They will eventually discolour and if they are in contact with moisture they can get quite furry looking. My Mum's got cake tops I made from over 14 yrs ago, so I think it depends how you store them.

Polymer clay is as easy to work with and better for display/storage if someone asked you for a permanent decoration.

I've not got around to my tutorials on figurines yet (I'm concentrating on cup cakes first, they're easier for learners), but I'm hoping to get some up soon.  You've inspired me to add info on storage. :)

Hope this helps.

:)
