AIv just purchased the mat as iv heard so much about it. What is the correct way to use the mat from brand new. E.g how much shortening to use and so on . Iv heard about a video that shows you.. anyone have a link to it?

Try sweetwise.com , the manufacturers of the mat.  They have videos.  That's what I watched.

I got the mat awhile ago but the first time I used it I didn't put anything on it. It worked just fine as it was.

me too. just make sure it is the right way up because the the print may come off

Oh yes, thats something you can't forget. Getting the print on the fondant is annoying.

I thought I read on their site that with the new mats, you don't need to season them, but I can't remember for sure.  I didn't season mine and it worked fine.
