Used Baking Soda Instead Of Baking Powder :(

I'm making a fluffy white cake for my mom's birthday (at the last minute, its almost 2am) and I wasn't paying much attention, and grabbed the baking soda, measured it out and poured it all over in my dry ingredients :( I realized what I did after that, and proceeded to grab the baking POWDER I was supposed to use and poured that into the mixture. I can already tell the difference, my cake batter mixture is clumpy...the cake is baking in the oven with a weird (non-fluffy) texture, with the middle of the cake sunken in :( ughh...so much for a homemade cake.

Think I'm stopping by the grocery store tomorrow :(

Sorry to hear this. But moms can be like that, always having last minute birthdays . Maybe you can have a redo next week? Sort of a Happy Unbirthday cake.

Yeah thanks :) I think its the thought that counts ;) I still got her a cake and took her to her fave restaurant, and the present she's been wanting.

Things have been kinda hectic with me, that I'm not even attempting the re-do :)

This made me smile as a friend of mine was just telling me how her fiance made her a birthday cake last year but got his 'tsp' and 'tbsp' confused...he added 3 tablespoons of baking powder to an 8" cake :-)  I'm sure she loved it anyway :-)

I feel sympathy for the OP's mistake. I've done that sort of thing myself. It's good to hear that the birthday effort was enjoyed by Mom anyway :D.

I've been teaching my son to bake. He's almost 22 and well past the "listening obediently" stage and well into "I know better than you" stage :D. He regularly confuses tsp and Tbs. I've been typing all my recipes out for him, and I started typing the full word for all measurements. It makes for much more edible delicacies!

My Baking Powder stays in the manufacturers container. My Baking Soda is in a big French glass container in a different spot.  Fingers crossed.

Hey all, I just wanted to apologize if I gave the impression that I was smiling at nastassia's misfortune...that certainly wasn't my intention.  Re-reading my post, i guess it could have come across that way.  I was meaning more of a 'sympathetic' smile as it's such an easy mistake to make and one which I have done myself on more than one occasion...it was kindof nice to know that I wasn't the only one!!  Anyhow, just wanted to make sure y'all knew that.  Now going to take 2 very brightly coloured Sharpies and write on the two different containers in BIG letters :-) x
