Hi,

I'm looking into purchasing a Non-stick fondant mat. No mater what I do my fondant sticks to my counter top. I was wondering what your thoughts were and which you thought were the best and why, along with your experience with different ones.

Some the brands I have come across are: Fat Daddio's, Ateco, "the Mat" from Sweet Wise. I'm sure there are more.

I have used the Wilton Fondant plastic mat but I can't say the I am too impressed with it. It's super thin and even when I trim gently my tools leave impressions.

Cheers!

Stevie, if you purchase the SweetWise mat it is very important to season it when you first use it.  I have both the silicone and The Mat.  I use them to roll out fondant but find it faster to lift the fondant onto the cake.
You will find what works for you after experimenting with a couple of different ways.

AI got some waterproof material from the local DIY store it was only £2 for a metre it's like the material that a rain cover of a pram is made from I use it all the time to cover my cakes it sticks great and acts the same as a proper fondant mat

Was it difficult to use? Do you get creases or wrinkles in your mat and/or fondant? How long do they last for?

I'm going to get that you mean the Mat is quicker to lift onto the cake. Do you a lot extra stretch when you are trying to take it off the Mat? I watched the video. She seemed to have some challenges.

Yes, which is why I changed how I use it.

Here's the video where it talks about seasoning the mat before you use it.

I still use a little powdered sugar anyway and rub it into the mat - I don't know if Sweetwise still has the video but there was one that talked about how you could use a little PS to help release.  I can't find it though.

I also think you can still get some sticking depending on the fondant you use and humidity.   I use Carma Massa, ifigourmet, and Pettinice/choc and it's fine.  I know others that use Fonderific and it gives them problems.   I still use it to roll out because it give a nice smooth surface but I find it takes too long for the fondant to release so I pick it up and place it on the cake.  Maybe I'm not doing it right but for me picking it up (or using a rolling pin) and placing it on the cake is gentler on the fondant and less stretching.

There is another thread on CC where yortma figured out to flip the Mat while rolling,  Begin on post# 96.

So in the end there are pros & cons, as with most products.  I hope this helps some.

Yeah it is food safe I researched the stuff before I used it as I was unsure too it isn't rain cover stuff but that's what it feels like it did come with a label to tell me what material it was that's how I researched it but it was quite a while a go so not sure of its name to share

Stevie G,  The package says " Made with all FDA approved materials".  I believe in one of the videos they state it meets EU & Canadian standards also.
