Yes but you'd have to use a lot and make sure your buttercream is ice cold before brushing it on.  Is there a reason you couldn't just color your buttercream some different shades and do it that way?

Luster dust is going to look muddy and won't be as shiny on buttercream as you think. AnnieCahill is right, the icing would have to be really hard for it to even work a little bit.

I spray buttercream cakes all the time with lustre dust.  Just like fondant, you are better off doing it in layers so that it doesn't bead.

But I do agree that I would color the icing a little first.

Cupcake First Birthday CakeThis buttercream is sprayed with super pearl.  You can go thicker with your airbrush paint too just by adding more pearl.  Just not too much or it may clog your brush.

AToo much luster dust on icing can also make it taste funky, so just be aware of that if you spray it.

AHi, I personally don't like lustre dust on buttercream it doesn't look that great. I tried it once and I was very unhappy with how the cake looked after, considering it looked great before I applied it lol

I would make a mixture of the Wilton pearl dust, the Wilton cake sparkles (in white), and sanding sugar.  The cake sparkles are in larger flakes so you need to crush them in between your fingers before putting it on.  It does a really nice job of adding edible sparkle.  Avoid disco dust at all costs.

Hold your cake in one hand (if you can) and then sprinkle all the stuff over a big baking pan.  If it's too big then just put your turntable in a large baking pan and do it that way, or over some sheets of waxed paper.
