Hi everyone!
This is my 1st post here so please bare with me...
I have this cake order to make in a few weeks time and am stressing about the middle silver layer.
1. what is the silver stuff made of and can i buy it or make it
2. how do i attach to the side of the cake? do i cover the cake in butter icing only and press the silver stuff in or do i cover with fondant and royal icing and then press it in?
It looks like Wilton Pearlized Sugar to me. You can just Google Wilton Pearlized Silver Sugar and it will come up. My local craft store carries it.
I would personally cover the cake in buttercream and press the sugar onto the sides. It seems extra laborious to me to cover it in fondant and then icing and then the sugar crystals. Hope that helps.
Because of the fact that the other layers are covered in fondant, I going to guess that the silver layer is covered in fondant also. Then probably sprayed silver with an air gun and then the Wilton Silver sugar sprinkles (which are nice and coarse) pressed on very thickly. If you press them into white buttercream, you will see the white through small gaps. It won't look like the middle layer of this cake.
Maybe this could work for you

thank you all so much for the advice.I'm a few months late. to be honest I had forgotten to give you feedback.
i covered my cake in grey fondant, I then made edible glue. I brushed that on my cake and pressed in the sugar silver crystals. worked perfectly!
