AI'm a beginner cake maker I use the basic buttercream frosting. I'm looking to make a two tier cake with buttercream instead of fondant . I find the frosting I use is very stiff. When trying to do the crumb coat it destroys the cake. What I'm asking is is there anyone out there that has a great recipe or tips to getting a nice crumb coat the a nice smooth final coat

AJust thin it down with a bit of hot water for the crumb coat, then chill and its easier to handle.
