If I'm making a 3 tier cake, and the bottom tier is going to have 3 or 4 layers ( 11/2 to 2 inches for each layer) do I have to put a support system between the bottom layers. In the past I have only used 2 layers per tier.

AOh im sorry I read incorrectly you do NOT need support between the layers. Only between the tiers

Basic rule is to use a support system for every 4" of cake height, so yes.
