I  have been approached by two different brides, both wanting similar cakes with a bead boarder at the bottom of the tiers. I would appreciate some assurance that I am heading in the right direction on these.

cake number 1 -  To me this looks like it would be a ribbon of some sort, bought and just put around the bottom of the cake. I have tired to find it online, but have not had any luck. Does anyone know for sure, and if it is a ribbon, do you know where it can be purchased at? Or even if it has a specific name?

cake number 2- Would this be as simple as cutting a fondant strip and using piping gel, or gum glue to stick the beads to it?

cake number 3 - looks like just beads attached with piping gel? maybe I am over thinking this, I just want to make sure I take the right approach and don't have beads falling off everywhere at a wedding.

Cake number 1 is my cake!!!!!!! :)

Hate to break it to you, but each and every one of those are edible dragees!!!!!  The sizes vary from 2mm up to 6mm and I *think* possibly the few very large ones were 8mm - but not sure on that.  It was a long time ago and I don't remember.

AOh my goodness Relznik, it looks so perfect I really thought it had to be a type of ribbon! Thank you so much for replying! It's just beautiful! It had to have taken hours to do that! How did you stick them to the cake? Just piping gel? My bride just wants them to look like a straight ribbon across the bottom of the cake like the second picture, but wanted the cake to be narrow at the bottom of the tiers and wider at the top like yours.

Relznik - stunning cake!  I actually have that marked in my 'ideas I'd like to put into my own wedding cake' folder!  Beautiful and oh-so time consuming work.  I just stuck about 800 little blossoms onto a cake to cover a tier and even that took hours...this must have taken days!

Maybe this is a stupid question but could this "ribbon" not be made in advance and then fitted to the finished cake? You might lose a few dragee in the assembly but these could be replaced. Perhaps by attaching them to a flexible material like hat mesh or bukrum? The work is stunning but rather daunting without the help of kitchen helpers.

Good idea - maybe on a piece of flexible gumpaste like they use for the lace molds?

Now THAT would be stunning! The beauty of that is you could trim the lace and attach the dragee's while the paste is still tacky. Voila!

In my looking at the cake I didn't give you credit for that beautiful piece of art. You are really talented. I'm sure everyone was delighted with that cake.
