I have always used crisco shortening in cakes, pies, cookies, etc. and until the last few years I have noticed it has been very soft, almost like softened butter. So I was in Aldi one day and noticed they had shortening made like the old crisco. Made by Carlini. It did have 1 gram trans fat. and was made of fully hydrogenated cottonseed oil and fully hydrogenated soybean oil. This used to be the old crisco formula. So I bought a tub! I have to say it is the best I have ever used. very firm shortening and pure white. I will continue using this brand. made my banana moist and melt in your mouth! AND its half the price of crisco.

Where are you? I've never heard of Aldi.

I think it's more common in Europe, but they have stores in the US, too. In my part of the US, it's a small warehouse style grocery store. You bag your own, there's a deposit if you want to borrow a cart, and there's only 1 or 2 varieties of anything, but the prices generally pretty good and there's only a few products I've disliked. I have not tried their shortening. http://www.aldi.com/?aldiurl=true
