AHi all, I'm new to cake decorating and I've never made a cake bigger than 2 layers but as m attempting a minion cake for my son's birthday which will be 6 layers, will I need to support the layers? If so how would I do this? All help greatly appreciated Kelly

AYes you will need supports and cake boards in between.

Layers or tiers? Tiers will definitely need a support system (i.e. cake boards, dowel rods, etc...).  However a cake with 6 "layers" could be done without, but you're safer having some sort of support since 6 layers will create a very tall cake (depending on the thickness of your layers).  You could even split it in two tiers with a cake board and dowel supports under the 2nd tier. Check out this thread: http://cakecentral.com/t/688088/6-tall-cake-layer-need-internal-support

AThanks both for your replies, shaunana its 6 layers, I'm thinking of putting 2 boards in every 2 layers and going to look tomorrow in my local hobbycraft what sort of dowels they have

Hello....thick straws work well (between the 2 cake boards/cards) I've used plastic dowels to support fruit cake tiers.  Good luck

AAs a rule of thumb for every 3/4" I'd use some internal support, for an extended tier or double barrel.

I'd use a board & dowells right in the middle-if your not transporting and its for personal event yes you could probably skip it-I wouldn't though.

Just make sure the board you use inside is a bit smaller then your actual cakes so it doesn't poke through.

Boards in-between help significantly!
