What Should I be Using to make a soild cake topper? and how long in advange do i make them?

I got asked to make a baby shower cake for a friend last minute, so I just did what I could with the time I had.

 

I used coloured fondant and a few cocktail sticks  ;-( ......BUT....

the Question is what do to support my fondant to stop it moving and help dry in time even?

 

I made this the day before the cake needed to be ready so it sagged and became misshaped ;-(

 

my friend was really happy but I just want to be happy myself knowing the structure is there.

 

 

Any help please? I'm new to making toppers and have very few tools... so advice on tools would be ace too ;-)

i add cornstarch (corn flour) to my fondant when i model with it--some peeps add tylose powder but for a figurine like this which btw is real cute--i would use the cornstarch because it is so cheap--i'd use the tylose for making multi piece flowers like roses but not the single cut push pin kind of flowers, leaves, butterflies etc.

 

i once had to make a gravity defying nurse's hat with zero time for it to set up and i added enough cs to make it happen--

 

so i'd just recommend that you play with it when you get a chance maybe 2-4 tablespoons to a handful size glob-- give or take

 

another thing--so if you decide to try this after a while you'll get the feel of how much to use--but in the meantime what i do to tell if my gumpaste, marzipan, fondant is 'ready' if it's stiff enough--i roll a golf ball size ball and set it on the counter for a few hours (if you have the time of course) and if it starts to flatten i add more powder--

Great advice thanks so much! Do I buy corn starch from a cake supplies shop or can I get it in supermarkets?

 

I am yet to try any flowers yet as they just look so hard to do.

 

The nurses hat sounds like it was so much fun ;-)

 

Ill remember the "ball test" for the future thanks

Babbo- very cute topper!!! I totally understand you though on wanting to make sure that you're happy with it too- I've been there :) One suggestion I might add is that you could take a small piece of bubble wrap or plastic wrap and put it inside the shoe while it dries. This would give it the support it needs to dry where you want it. I would say that within 24 hours (though that might be cutting it a bit close, depending on weather) it should be firm enough to remove the plastic and gently place the topper on your cake. But it probably wouldn't be completely dry for 2-3 days, depending on the density of your toppers. If you look in my gallery, I recently made a set of Santa cake toppers. I had to make Santa's bag twice because the first one "deflated" overnight. I used a little pouch of bubble wrap on the second try and it worked great :)

 

I use the Wilton gumpaste tool set and they have been great for me. Also, a sharp pairing knife and xacto knife. Those are my go-to tools :)

Thank you for your tips ;-) I need to invest in some tools and definitely some bits like bubble wrap! It was typical that I had nothing in the house and was looking around my kitchen like a mad woman trying to find something to support it long enough for it to try!

 

So if I make toppers a week in advance ill have plenty of time for drying ;-)

 

I checked out your toppers they are amazing!!

Thanks Babbo! I am still working on my cake decorating techniques but really love to make toppers :) And yes, a week is definitely enough drying time. I'm not a full time baker and am SLOW so I always make my toppers/figurines well in advance of my cake. As long as you store them properly those little guys will last for quite a while :)
