I always use americolor gels, i bought a new set a week ago and used 6 colours for different coloured frosting. They made the frosting bitter! pale colour and almost a grainy appearance! i didn't even use that much! i had to make do with the shockingly pale colours but he taste was terrible! is it possible i got a bad batch of colours?? or am i doing something wrong 
they seem to colour my fondant just fine!
AOk so this made sense so I checked and they are the regular soft gel colours. I dont think I had enough iceing sugar in my buttercream, if there was to much butter could thst made it go funny??

Yes. An icing that is mostly butter won't take color as well and since you'd wind up using more color, eventually you'd begin to taste it.
