Ok so I've been doing cupcakes and other baked goods for some time now. I wanted to get into doing specialty cakes. Do you guys have any suggestions on an easy cake for me to try for my first cake?

AHi, im a cake decorating rookie myself.... by specialty do you mean custom? Like with fondant or with buttercream? I ask because im in wilton course 1 now, my instructor was saying that they have alot of beginner cakes for you to try. You can probably find on the website. For me personally, ive just been coming up with different ideas each week and trying different techniques that ive watched on you tube or from advice from other cake decorators that I network with online.

this one

http://rosebakes.com/ladybug-cake-cupcakes-updated/

and one way among many to make the body is-- bake one layer in a bowl and then bake a 9" cake layer or whatever size matches the  bowl best and stack them--or use a sports ball pan--or bake 3 eight inch layers and cut it out--

plus she has tips on there too--how she did it--you can use rice krispie treats for the head or use a cupcake--or cake scraps from carving--

up for it? idk--too hard maybe--but this is easy in the sense that it is very straight forward--no surprises--

maybe you need to start with a layer cake--

yes I mean custom, I honestly want to do both. I've been getting request and have stayed away from them but now I'm ready to jump in.

A[@]tasteetreats[/@] from what everyone has told me, its all about practice, practice practice.... there is a website where you can order a cake dummy so you can practice decorating on it over and over again without having to constantly bake a cake... the website I think is dallas foam.com

I really wanted some feedback, and I found a really easy purse tutorial so that's why I decided to try that one first. But thank you all for your feedback

The best advice I can give you is to not just read how other people create their works of art (you can't always find it), but it is to jump in with both feet.  To look at something, take it apart with your mind, experiment and recreate it in your own style will teach you more about custom cakes than you can imagine.   The process of figuring things out is just as important as the tutorials. You may even have some disasters (have had my share)  but you will learn from them and you still get to eat them :)

The fact that you have experience with baking is a huge plus. Have fun experimenting and good luck with your purse cake.  It's good to gain a little confidence and a purse cake is a good place to start.
