AIt depends on the reason for the gathering and the family.

If its for the holidays (Christmas, Hanukkah, etc. ) then I'd make a Christmas scene, igloo, Santa ...

You know your family better then we do. Any allergys? White or Vanilla is typically something everyone can enjoy. You could do Marble. Maybe something more festive, choc w/ peppermint filling, spice or gingerbread, eggnog.

AWhich flavor is best, hmmmm well I like chocolate and my family will eat anything.

I guess I'd make a white cake (vanilla bean, classic and yummy). But, again, it depends on your recipes and your family. What's your best recipe?

If its just a gathering you can decorate it any way you want! Those are my favorites, free reign!

Simply work on smoothing your icing or a design you've been dying to try or perfect.

I would consider the setting-formal dinner vs backyard BBQ and go from there if your concerned about the decoration.
