Is this Possible?

Thread Starter

Hi all!

I'm new here but I've been lurking here for quite some time.  I just love how you guys are so helpful to everyone...even those who have crazy ideas...which is why I'm here.

You see it snowed here a few days ago and  I thought it would be fun to make a cake out of snow!  So I did!  It turned out pretty good and I posted it on my facebook account and suddenly I had all these people telling me how cute it was and how I should turn this into a business!

At first I thought that was stupid, and then I thought...wow...what a great idea!  They'd be great as decorations outside for Christmas...or birthdays!  Who wouldn't love to get one?  They're certainly easy to make.  How could I market this?

I know it sounds silly to some, but I'm really serious about this and need your advise.  So please keep that in mind--I really want your opinions.  Thanks!  I look forward to hearing from all you out-of-the-box cakers !

Here it is:

Wow. How creative! I guess this would be a seasonal business, huh?

I think you should be posh and call your hobby business "Gateaux de Neige."

There. Their. They're not the same.

I hope I die before "your" becomes the official contraction of "you are."

How would you guarantee an order? Unless it's freezing cold, where I live just during the past two weeks it went from rain to light snow to warm & sunny now it's freezing-that would be my main concern.

Would they be edible? If so you obviously couldn't use snow. I love snow cones, you could get creative with colors but how would you serve that without worrying about it melting? What kind of equipment would you need?

Or would it just be like an outside decoration?

I think you might have a hard time actually marketing these unless you live in a place where you get a lot of snow without fail every year.

Is this just for decoration? Cuz red berries are sometimes poisonous. Or are they faux berries for the gateaux?

As smckinney07 mentioned, supply would be a concern unless you had a large amount of freezer space to store the snow. Demand for such an item would also be pretty low, considering you would not be able to display it inside and the skills to create a similar product can be easily duplicated with no training.

Now if you could encase the snow cake in a clear box that kept the temperature below freezing that might be an interesting product, but the costs would likely be higher than its market value.

It could still be marketed as all-natural. And organic.

I don't know about that.... all the pollutants floating around in the air, picked up by the snow flakes, nah, I wouldn't chance it. This is a snow job if I ever saw one.
