Hi all!
I'm new here but I've been lurking here for quite some time. I just love how you guys are so helpful to everyone...even those who have crazy ideas...which is why I'm here.
You see it snowed here a few days ago and I thought it would be fun to make a cake out of snow! So I did! It turned out pretty good and I posted it on my facebook account and suddenly I had all these people telling me how cute it was and how I should turn this into a business!
At first I thought that was stupid, and then I thought...wow...what a great idea! They'd be great as decorations outside for Christmas...or birthdays! Who wouldn't love to get one? They're certainly easy to make. How could I market this?
I know it sounds silly to some, but I'm really serious about this and need your advise. So please keep that in mind--I really want your opinions. Thanks! I look forward to hearing from all you out-of-the-box cakers !
Here it is:
AWow im happy you guys like it though I dont know what a gateaux or neige means. I was thinking of 'let them eat snow' ...you know, something fun.
AHow would you guarantee an order? Unless it's freezing cold, where I live just during the past two weeks it went from rain to light snow to warm & sunny now it's freezing-that would be my main concern.
Would they be edible? If so you obviously couldn't use snow. I love snow cones, you could get creative with colors but how would you serve that without worrying about it melting? What kind of equipment would you need?
Or would it just be like an outside decoration?
You need to get Batterup to make you a stand with a 'refrigerator coil' in the base - you might need to tell her to hold back on the bling or it might outshine your cake
I think you might have a hard time actually marketing these unless you live in a place where you get a lot of snow without fail every year.
Is this just for decoration? Cuz red berries are sometimes poisonous. Or are they faux berries for the gateaux?
AAs smckinney07 mentioned, supply would be a concern unless you had a large amount of freezer space to store the snow. Demand for such an item would also be pretty low, considering you would not be able to display it inside and the skills to create a similar product can be easily duplicated with no training.
Now if you could encase the snow cake in a clear box that kept the temperature below freezing that might be an interesting product, but the costs would likely be higher than its market value.

Flog 'em to the coeliacs........ they ARE gluten free !!
AI don't know about that.... all the pollutants floating around in the air, picked up by the snow flakes, nah, I wouldn't chance it. This is a snow job if I ever saw one.

Gaaaahhhhhhh - you are JUST jealous that you can't market these...... Snow jobs in Arizona???
About as likely as SNOW jobs in Sydney ..... in summer !
At least there isn't a big blow fly on it ....... or it would be a ..... BLOW job
AIf you are serious about this I would get started with a flurry of advertising, otherwise you might be iced out of the market.
What a unique idea, frost52! There are definitely business possibilities. Think in terms of ice sculptures which are quite popular and last longer than we imagine. Of course not in hot climates, but look at restaurants and caterers that use ice sculptures in their businesses. CC is the perfect place to fine tune your concept.
See this idea? Think outside the bottle. When Martha Stewart catered events she often did versions of flowers surrounding frozen bottles of vodka. Her book Entertaining has a lovely photo with deep pink roses. She has a tutorial for making these.
Good luck and don't let the naysayers stop your imagination. My only other advice (advise? ) is to use edible flowers or berries. No point in killing your customers.

There's no business like snow business. Good luck frosty maybe you can market sand cakes in the off season.
AI really appreciate some of the comments, however, some of you are making fun of me I can tell and that's not very nice. I don't know what 'gatex niex' or whatever one of you said to call my business but it sounds dirty, and I want to be taken seriously...but still be fun.
Thank you mimifix for your thoughts. I hadn't thought about restaurants...but why couldn't I use poisonous berries if they're pretty? I don't mean to sound stupid, but I don't think anyone is going to eat the snow cake...would they?

Interesting thoughts Jason. Do you know wherei could find clear plastic boxes that could work for this?

You don't have to be mean. I'm just throwing an idea out there. Just because you don't have any doesn't mean you should make fun of mine. You don't know me!
AYou know it takes a lot for someone to put an idea out there...especially when you're going through what I am now. I didn't want to be made fun of. I was hoping for some encouragement. Or at least some serious discussion. I know one thing...I'll think twice before posting here again!
