AI am looking to take better cake/cookie photos with my compact digital camera (canon powershot a400). It's a decent point and shoot- has macro setting, good quality- but I want those gorgeous close ups like bakerella and smitten kitchen!. I don't want to make the jump into buying a DSLR, but I haven't yet figured out how to get consistently better photos from this camera. But I am sure there is a way! Anyone have suggestions?

Plus you may find if you switch your compact to the macro setting (it looks like a tulip or flower) this will enable you to get a little bit closer with your camera.  Place your products on an attractive base and make sure that they are in good light so that your automatic flash doesn't go off (not a good look!)  OR, if you want a slightly shallower depth of field (so everything else goes out of focus) the portrait setting will also produce something similar.

To get truly lovely photos and the soft focus look/shallow depth of field then a DSLR will eventually work much better.
