Hi all, doing a Sweet 16 Cake. Looking for EDIBLE pearls, haven't found in a local store and cake soon. I do have silver edible spray. Wondering if anyone has done this and worried if the silver will drip onto white fondant. How did you apply, worried if I apply to cake with water or vodka silver will drip....

Thanks so much,

Maria

I'm not sure how the silver spray would work or if it would rub off at all. Do you have a party supply store nearby? Something like Party City? I know they sell Sixlets and they have them in silver. Would probably be easier for you.

If that's not an option, I know silver luster works on them. Throw them in a bag, add your luster, shake around, voila…silver balls. Just use tweezers to put them on the cake to avoid finger marks.

you might have better luck making them out of gumpaste or fondant and then spraying them. if you live in California, you won't find them. metallic dragees were banned a few years ago. my mother sends them to me from illinois.

I have tried both methods as described by the ladies above. The ones I made from gumpaste got sticky with the moisture fron the spray. Putting them in a ziploc with luster dust worked well but were very light silver. I think if you make your gumpaste a light gray, the silver will stand out more.

Now I only use sixlets, although they might be a bit big.

Good Luck!

Just curious, why were they banned, we can buy them by the kg here in Australia.

They are considered inedible in California

"The U.S. Food and Drug Administration considers the metallic-finish dragées to be inedible, and they are sold with a notice that they are for decorative purposes only. Early in the 20th century, the silver finish may have contained mercury (it no longer does). The sale of these dragées was banned for some time. Although the metallic-finish dragées can be purchased in 49 U.S. states, they are no longer sold in California due to a 2003 lawsuit against several sellers.[11] However, in other countries (including the United Kingdom) they are classified as food items."

When we were younger, my brother and I thought we could "sneak" a treat by eating some of those silver dragees that my mother had in a jar on the shelf!  Oh surprise - we thought we'd break our teeth!  They should've been banned years ago for that!  But I see them in the stores by me - there is noooo way I'd put them on a cake and serve it to others!  I love a colored-sixlet - saves a lot of time and they are very edible!  They just are not as small as a dragee.

Good luck.

AThey are actually not banned in California. There is no state law banning them. What happened was a lawyer in Northern California began threatening to sue cake shops claiming they were toxic. Most cake shops took the position that it is not worth the hassle. I live in Southern California and know of three shops that sell metallic dragees.

Yeah there are a few shops in my area of Cali that I buy them from. But I need a larger size and the only way to get them is to order online. But then they won't ship to Cali. So frustrating!

I recently made some pearls for a cake with fondant and a mold. I sprayed the Wilton silver spray on them, and they looked kinda blueish. I would have used pearl dust, but I was finishing the cake onsite and decided to add the pearl border, I didn't have my pearl dust so I picked up some of the spray at wal mart. I didn't like it. It stuck to the fondant and dried, but was uneven and blue/purple looking.

I think the Chefmaster spray is a better silver but I have also use Americolor airbrush silver with a tiny bit of vodka in a small container.  I swirled them around and put them on parchment paper - not the easiest method but it worked when I didn't have any spray.

Thank you all sooo much for all your information and help.  So finally I have time to tell you I bought white pearls but they weren't sticking to the fondant so I hand rolled the "greenish" color fondant I had. Yes, it took forever but I and my friends were pleased with the cake. Hopefully I will be able to attach it to show you, lol.

Thanks again,

Maria

Very nice!

You said the pearls weren't sticking to the fondant.  What did you use for glue?  Royal icing works great.  Just pipe little dots and place your pearls on.
