Layering a 6" atop a 12"

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I am fairly new at this.  I want to make a cake for about 45 people and a 12" with a 6" seems to be the combination/amount that works but aesthetically would it look nice?  Also, I only have 6", 9" and 12" pans.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I don't usually like the look of a cake with that much difference between the tiers.  I would go with a 6 inch on top of the 9 inch with a thinner 12 inch tier on the bottom.  Or if you want a 6 and 12 inch then put a dummy 9 inch tier in between them or a thinner 9 inch tier.  I think you will like the look better.

I do not think that would look good. How about a double barrel 9"?

A 6" x 9" serves 44.  A 6" x 10" serves 50.
