I have been in contact with a friend of mine for over a month now, planning a cake for her friend's 30th birthday. We talked initially in September and she gave me the date of November 9. The reason that date sticks with me is because I had a wedding I was supposed to attend today (the 9th) and wasn't sure if I could fit everything in. The wedding scheduled for today ended up being moved one week later to the 16th as the groom is serving in Afghanistan and couldn't come home in time. Anyway, I told her I could make her cake if she still wanted me to make it because the wedding was rescheduled. 

She was adamant she did not want fondant but wanted purple buttercream and "sparkles". I continued to ask other details she wanted for the cake. Any flowers, any stripes, ruffles, etc...? No. Just purple and sparkles. UGH!! Give me some direction here!!!

I asked her a few times what flavor cake she wanted. She wasn't sure and had to ask her friend's husband what she liked. On Monday this week I still hadn't heard about the flavor. I sent her a text message and asked her "what flavor of cake did you want for this Saturday?" She replies with "funfetti" and chocolate. Ok fine.

Yesterday I get a text from her saying she is running late and won't be at the venue until 5:30. This text came through at 3:00. I sent her a message back and asked, "Is the party today or tomorrow? You gave me the date of the 9th, and that's what is on my calendar." She laughs and says, "Today! As long as I have a cake by 7, it's fine!"

OMG!!!!! I had planned on baking yesterday evening and decorating this morning. I have another job I do as well, so now I have to make up my hours today because of the wrong date given to me. Thank God I work at home, but I have a 1 year old who needs most of my attention throughout the day, and I work for a University hospital. I definitely need all my brains in order to do my job.  

It was awful! I baked, torted, frosted and decorated a 3 tier cake in 3 hours. It was not my best work, but she had a cake. I'm just hoping they were too drunk to realize it wasn't that great looking. haha! I didn't even take a picture. Days like these make me want to throw in the towel. I hate last minute crap!

Maybe if people who can't plan an event properly showed up with no cake more often, they would get their act together and communicate better with their baker.

I wouldn't have been so quick to make a cake with 4 hours notice.  (Honestly I would have just said "no" and suggested she stop at a grocery store on the way to the party.)

Thanks everyone! You're right, I should have told her no. Oh well! Lesson learned. I even had my husband drive me because I had no time to refrigerate any part of it. I wanted to make sure I wasn't going to have cake all over my car if it wasn't going to make it!! The nickname of where I live is called "The Hill City". Yep...I think we found every hill on the way.
